ABBA: DUM DUM DIDDLE

Llegamos al último viernes de Octubre, y corresponde presentarte el segmento musical dedicado a un tema musical del cuarteto sueco ABBA. El pasado 11 de Octubre se cumplieron 40 años del lanzamiento del gran álbum “ARRIVAL”, Y por eso motivo, para el día de hoy, he querido elegir para ti una canción de dicho álbum: “Dum Dum Diddle”. En su momento, en 1976, no llegué a escuchar este tema y recién pude escucharla en Youtube hace algunos años, y me gustó por su buen ritmo pop melódico con cierta influencia folk, sin llegar a ser una gran canción o una obra de arte, aunque realmente guardaba concordancia con el estilo musical que imperaba en el álbum. En este tema, lo que sobresalía era la instrumentación, y sobre todo, la interpretación estupenda por parte de Agnetha y Frida.

“Dum Dum Diddle” fue escrita y producida por Björn Ulvaeus y Benny Andersson, y fue incluida como album track del “ARRIVAL”, aunque en 1977 fue lanzada como single solamente en Argentina en el sello RCA. Contó con la colaboración de Lasse Wellander  en la guitar acústica durante la estrofa. Y en cuanto a la letra, habla sobre una mujer quien calmadamente espera por el afecto de un triste y solitario hombre, quien encuentra como único placer el tocar constantemente y practicar con su violin. Y en cuanto a su performance en vivo, fue incluida en el set list de los shows del cuarteto en su gran gira que realizaron por Europa y Australia en 1977, y la tocaban aproximadamente a la mitad del show. Hasta el próximo mes de Noviembre, en donde celebrando los 71 años de la siempre bella Frida, con una canción del álbum “THE VISITORS”, en el 35° aniversario de su lanzamiento. HACE 25 AÑOS (1991-V)

Llegamos al último miércoles del mes de Octubre, y en esta oportunidad, corresponde presentarte el segmento musical de 1991, hace 25 años, cuando quien escribe tenía 28 años. Para el día de hoy, he querido escoger para ti, dos buenos temas de la recordada británica DIRE STRAITS.  

1.-  HEAVY FUEL (Dire Straits).-  Luego del mega éxito obtenido por la banda británica Dire Straits con el album “BROTHERS IN ARMS” en 1985 y 1986, la banda se dio un buen descanso en los siguientes años y Mark Knopfler aprovechó para emprender algunos proyectos solistas. Al entrar a la década del 90, el grupo retornó al panorama musical con una nueva producción musical, aunque la valla dejada por su antecessor era demasiado alta. Y recuerdo que lo primero que se escuchó fue el tema “Calling Elvis”, que tuvo regular difusión. Luego, pude eescuchar en Radio Doble Nueve la canción “Heavy Fuel”, un tema con bastante ritmo rockero y un buen riff de guitarra que tenía un rol protagónico. En lo personal, me gustóm pero lo consideré inferior al contenido de su anterior álbum. El tema fue escrito por Mark Knopfler y producido por Mark Knopfler y Alan Clark. Fue el segundo single del álbum “ON EVERY STREET”, llegando al Nª 55 en UK. Además, fue Nª 1 en el US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks, Nª 17 en Canadá, Nª 19 en Bélgica, Nª 22 en el US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks e Italia, Nª 24 en Holanda, Nª 26 en Australia, Nª 32 en Francia, Nª 34 en Nueva Zelanda y Nª 48 en Alemania. La frase “You gotta run on heavy fuel” fue extraída de la novela “Money” de Martin Amis, en la cual Knopfler basó la letra del tema. 25 años después, es momento de rememorar esta canción. 2.-  THE BUG (Dire Straits).-  Otra canción que se escuchó del album “ON EVERY STREET”, fue “The Bug”. Me pareció una canción con bastante ritmo, dentro del típico estilo musical de la banda, y en lo personal, me gustó más que “Heavy Fuel”. El tema fue escrito y producido por Mark Knopfler, y fue el cuarto y ultimo single del album en UK, y además, su ultimo single en UK. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, fue la canción que más sonó del album y su video fue difundido en los programas musicales de ese entonces. Ha transcurrido un cuarto de siglo y vale la pena evocar esta rítmica canción. Disfrútala.

Este ha sido el quinto segmento musical de 1991. Espero que este par de buenos temas de Dir Straits hayan sido de tu agrado y como siempre, te espero con tu visita y comentario. BEE GEES: HE'S A LIAR

Llegamos al tercer viernes del mes de Octubre y hoy toca presentarte el segmento musical dedicado a un tema musical de los BEE GEES. En este mes de Octubre, se cumplen 35 años del lanzamiento de uno de los álbumes más subvalorados de los Bee Gees, “LIVING EYES”. Y es motivo perfecto para presentarte el muy buen tema “He’s A Liar”. Recordemos que luego del mega éxito del soundtrack de “Satyrday Night Fever” y el álbum “SPIRITS HAVING FLOWN”, en plena vorágine de la música disco, con el advenimiento de la nueva década del 80, se llegó a un hastío total de todo lo que tuviera que ver con la música disco y los grupos de éste género fueron el blanco de furibundos ataques y rechazo total, siendo el principal blanco los hermanos Gibb. Luego de descansar en 1980, al año siguiente, en 1981, el trío regresó al mundo de la música, con una propuesta musical distinta y renovada, dejando atrás cualquier vestigo discotequero, y el primer single fue justamente “He’s A Liar”, en un estilo bastante rock. Recuerdo que en su momento, se escuchó la canción en Doble Nueve y en algunas otras radios locales, pero con las mismas, poco tiempo después, desapareció de las diversas programaciones radiales. Aún subsistía ese sentimiento anti-disco, que en el fondo era bastante prejuicioso, porque ni el tema ni el resto del álbum, se alineaban a esos ritmos bailables. Me acuerdo cuando vi por primera vez el video en “Disco Club”, y me gustó mucho porque mostraba esa faceta actoral y algo graciosa del recordado Maurice Gibb.

“He's a Liar” fue escrita por Barry, Robin y Maurice Gibb, y producida por Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Albhy Galuten y Karl Richardson. Fue grabada entre Febrero y Junio de 1991 y fue lanzada como primer single del álbum “LIVING EYES” el 19 de Setiembre de 1981, llegando apenas al N° 30 en USA, según Billboard. Además, fue N° 1 en Grecia, N° 5 en Italia, N° 6 en España, N° 10 en Bélgica, N° 12 en Holanda, N° 19 en Francia, N° 30 en Austria, N° 33 en Canadá, N° 38 en Australia, N° 68 en Alemania y N° 82 en UK. A diferencia de sus tres últimos álbumes, que incluyó a su banda permanente de estudio y de tours en la grabación de sus temas, para esta canción, contó con músicos de estudio como Don Felder de Eagles en la guitarra principal, Harold Cowart en el bajo, Steve Gadd en la batería y Richard Tee en el piano. Y en lo concierne a su performance en concierto, nunca fue interpretada en vivo por el trío ni formó parte del set list de sus shows, ya que en ese año 1981, el grupo no efectuó tour alguno –recién volverían a los escenarios en 1989 en la gira mundial del “ONE”. HACE 30 AÑOS (1986-XVI)

Llegamos al tercer miércoles del mes de Octubre, y en esta ocasión, me toca presentarte el segmento musical de 1986, hace 30 años, cuando quien escribe tenía 23 años. Para el día de hoy, he querido elegir para ti dos muy buenas canciones de dos miembros de la recordada banda norteamericana de Boston, The Cars.

1.-  EMOTION IN MOTION (Ric Ocasek).-  Luego del exitoso recopilatorio “GREATEST HITS”, lanzado por The Cars, los miembros de la banda decidieron tomarse un tiempo y dedicarse a proyectos solistas. Fue así como Ric Ocasek, vocalista del grupo y compositoer de todos sus hits, lanzó un álbum solista. Y lo primero que se escuchó fue la muy hermosa balada, “Emotion In Motion”, que tenía todo ese estilo melódico de The Cars, que hacía recordar a la canción, “I’m Not The One”. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, se escuchó bastante en Radio Doble Nueve y tuvo una relativa difusión. El tema fue escrito por Ric Ocasek y producido por Ric Ocasek, Chris Hughes y Ross Cullum. Fue lanzado como primer single del álbum “THIS SIDE OF PARADISE”, llegando al N° 15 en USA, según Billboard. Además, fue N° 1 en el USA Album Rock Tracks, N° 8 en el USA Afult Contemporary Charts y N° 35 en Nueva Zelanda. Y adicionalmente, aunque era un álbum solista de Ric Ocasek, pero contó con la colaboración de otros miembros de The Cars. En este tema, Greg Hawkes participó en los teclados, y Benjamin Orr estuvo en los coros, y además, contó con Roland Orzabal –de Tears For Fears- en la guitarra. A modo de información, el grupo se volvería a reunir en 1987 para el álbum “DOOR TO DOOR”. 30 años después, es grato escuchar este hermoso tema. Disfrútalo.

2.-  STAY THE NIGHT (Benjamin Orr).-  Al igual que Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr también lanzó un álbum solista en 1986, que fue su debut en solitario, del cual se extrajo su mayor hit solista, “Stay The Night”, una muy hermosa balada al estilo de “Drive” de The Cars. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, se escuchó regular en Radio Doble Nueve y Telestereo, y los que seguíamos a esta gran banda de Boston, nos inquietaba saber si estos proyectos solistas de Ocasek y Orr, podrían significar un próximo final de la banda. Felizmente, al año siguiente, esas conjeturas quedaron solo en eso, ya que lanzarían el que a la postre, sería su última producción musical. El tema fue escrito por Benjamin Orr y Diane Grey Page, y producido por Mike Shipley, Ben Orr y Larry Klein. Fue incluido en el álbum “THE LACE” y lanzado como single en Noviembre de 1986, llegando al N° 24 en USA, según Billboard. Como se sabe, Benjamin Orr nos dejó para siempre un 3 de Octubre del 2000, hace 16 años, a la edad de 53 años. Pero siempre es bueno recordarlo con esta muy bella balada. Disfrútala.
