MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 25 AÑOS (1987-XII)

Hemos llegado al último segmento musical correspondiente al año 1987, hace 25 años. Durante los 12 meses del año 2012, 1987 nos ha acompañado infaltablemente con muy buenos temas. Y hemos querido reservar lo mejor para el final con tres canciones que aunque lograron triunfar en 1988, fueron originales de 1987 porque en ese año fueron lanzadas como singles y también los albums en donde se encontraban incluidas. Hasta hace poco, había programado estos tres temas para 1988, pero al final preferí incluirlas en el año en el cual vieron la luz. Y también tendremos un par de “bonus” para concluir este año 1987. 

1.- GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU (George Harrison).- Cuando en 1987, supe del regreso de George Harrison con un nuevo album, la expectativa era enorme. Era el retorno de un Beatle y las noticias decían que se había juntado en la producción con Jeff Lynne, el genio de la E.L.O. Como siempre escuchaba Radio Doble Nueve, estaba atento a que pasaran lo nuevo de George. Paralelamente había escuchado en Doble Nueve una canción bien rítmica y contagiosa, pero no sabía su título ni quién la cantaba. Y grande fue mi sorpresa cuando justo pude captar que anunciaban lo nuevo de George Harrison y era la canción “Got My Mind Set On You”. Al escuchar los primeros acordes del tema, de inmediato la identifiqué y era justamente esa canción que no sabía ni su título ni quién la cantaba, y ello hizo que me gustara mucho más. Aquí en nuestro medio fue todo un gran éxito en el verano de 1988 y no solo se escuchó en Doble Nueve, sino también en todas las otras radios y recuerdo que en Radio América hasta llegó a ser Disco del Año 1988. Era el retorno triunfal y por la puerta grande de un Beatle.

"Got My Mind Set on You" fue escrita originalmente por Rudy Clark y grabada por James Ray en 1962, sin éxito. Pero sin duda, la versión más famosa fue la grabada por George en los estudios Friar Park, en Oxford, en 1987 y fue producida por Jeff Lynne y George Harrison. Fue lanzada como primer single del album “CLOUD NINE” el 12 de Octubre de 1987 en UK y llegó al Nª 2 en UK permaneciendo 4 semanas en dicha posición. Y en 1988, llegó al Nª 1 por 1 semana en USA, según Billboard, en el US Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks y en Australia. Además fue Nº 7 en Alemania, Nº 8 en Austria, Nº 10 en Noruega y Suecia, Nº 11 en Suiza, Nº 19 en Francia y Nº 64 en Japón. Y en cuanto al video, hubieron dos muy buenos video clips de la canción: el primero que fue dirigido por Gary Weiss, mostraba a una pareja de jóvenes que jugaban para poder atrapar un juguete de una bailarina. Y el segundo clip, también dirigido por Gary Weis, muestra a George sentando tocando en un studio de una mansión. Y en el medio de la canción, con el uso de un doble, George se pone a bailar y salta para volver a sentarse en su sitio. Ambos fueron muy buenos videos y contribuyeron al gran éxito alcanzado en todo el mundo de esta gran canción y de su gran album “CLOUD NINE”. Precisamente para el 2013, uno de los segmentos musicales de 1988 estará dedicado a tres temas de este maravilloso album. 25 años después, volvemos a recordar este inolvidable éxito del gran George Harrison.

2.-  FAITH (George Michael).- Luego de la separación del dúo Wham!, que tuvo un éxito resonante en todo el mundo entre 1983 y 1986, había bastante expectativa por lo que George Michael podría ofrecer en una carrera solista. Y ya se habían dado algunas muestras con temas como “Careless Whisper” y “A Different Corner”, que habían alcanzado gran éxito para George. Y lo primero que se escuchó de él fue el tema “I Want Your Sex”, que le fue bien pero que generó cierta controversia por su letra y por su video. Pero su siguiente paso lo llevo a la cima y al mega estrellato con su single llamado “Faith”. De esta canción se ha dicho bastante, pero el hecho es que la rompió en todo el mundo y aquí en nuestro medio, la cosa no fue diferente. Tuvo harta difusión en todas las radios y su video también fue visto regularmente en los programas musicales de TV. Sin duda, George Michael se había sacudido de la imagen de Wham!, con nuevo look y un estilo musical propio y exitoso, arrasando en todos los charts del mundo con “Faith”.

"Faith" fue escrita y producida por George Michael y lanzada como single el 12 de Octubre de 1987. Y el 12 de Diciembre de 1987 llegó al Nº 1 en USA, según Billboard, permaneciendo 4 semanas en dicha posición. También fue Nº 1 en Canadá, Holanda, Italia y Nueva Zelanda, Nº 2 en UK e Irlanda, Nª 3 en Noruega y España, Nº 4 en Austria y Suiza, Nº 5 en Alemania y en el US Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts, Nº 9 en Suecia, Nº 22 en Francia y Nº 86 en Japón. Y además fue Disco del Año 1988 en USA, según Billboard. Y definitivamente, contribuyó a las millonarias ventas del album “FAITH” y al éxito de sus siguientes singles. Y al igual que en el anterior tema, en el 2013 también tendremos un segmento musical de 1988 dedicado a 2 o 3 temas de este muy exitoso album. Luego de 25 años, vale la pena recordar esta buena canción una vez más.

3.  NEED YOU TONIGHT (INXS).- Tras destacar con “Don’t Change” en 1983 y “What You Need” en 1985, sin duda alguna, los años 1987 y 1988 fueron el momento de la consagración de INXS con su album “KICK”. Y lo que marcó el punto de partida fue el primer single de dicho album, “Need You Tonight”. Con un sonido mucho más electrónico que sus producciones previas, el tema combinaba perfectamente el sonido de la batería con los riffs de la guitarra, dando como resultado un tema con una gran base bastante rítmica, con melodía e impecablemente interpretado por Michael Hutchence. Aquí sonó bastante en Radio Doble Nueve y en varias radios locales y su video también fue visto con mucha frecuencia en programas musicales. 

"Need You Tonight" fue escrita por Andrew Farriss y Michael Hutchence y producida por Chris Thomas. Fue lanzada como primer single del album “KICK” el 23 de Setiembre de 1987, llegando al Nº 1 en USA, según Billboard, por 1 semana, el 30 de Enero de 1988. También fue Nº 2 en UK e Irlanda, Nº 7 en el US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs, Nª 8 en Italia, Nº 10 en Francia, Nº 12 en el US Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks y Nº 16 en Austria y Alemania. En la autobiografía oficial de INXS, “INXS: Store To Story”, Andrew Farriss comentó que el famoso riff de la canción apareció de repente en su cabeza mientras esperaba un taxi par air al aeropuerto para tomar un vuelo a Hong Kong. El le pidió al taxista que lo esperara unos minutos mientras él recogía algo del cuarto del motel. Aunque en realidad, se había ido a grabar el riff y regresó una hora después con una cinta ante un muy enojado taxista. Este riff lo describiría como un sonido parecido a un cruce entre Keith Richards y Prince. Y en cuanto al video clip del tema, fue dirigido por Richard Lowenstein y ganó 5 MTV Video Music Awards, incluyendo Video del Año. El gran éxito de “What You Need” contribuyó al mega éxito del album “KICK” en 1988 y al de los siguientes singles como “Devil Inside”, “New Sensation” y “Never Tear Us Apart”, que también serán objeto de un post en un segmento de 1988. Mientras tanto, disfrutemos nuevamente de esta muy buena canción.

4.- THAT’S FREEDOM (Tom Kimmel).- Y para terminar este año 1987, he querido incluir un par de "bonus". El primero es un tema llamado "That's Freedom" del cantante y poeta norteamericano Tom Kimmel. El tema fue escrito por el mismo Kimmel y fue incluido en el album "5 TO 1". Y aquí en nuestro medio, tuvo buena difusión en Radio Doble Nueve, más no en las radios masivas y pude ver su video en un programa musical. Realmente muy buena canción que gozó de mis preferencias hace 25 años.

5.-  CALL OF THE WILD (Deep Purple).- Y para terminar, un tema con mucho rock de Deep Purple y que también sonó bastante en Doble Nueve hace 25 años. Fue incluida en el album "THE HOUSE OF THE BLUE LIGHT" y fue lanzada como single, llegando al N° 92 en UK y al N° 14 en el USA Album Rock Tracks. Fue escrita por Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover y Jon Lord, y producida por Roger Glover y Deep Purple. Y aunque a los fans puristas y antiguos de Deep Purple, como que no les gustó mucho, es un tema con bastante rock y con un video bien divertido. Con este tema, cerramos el segmento musical de 1987.

Esta ha sido el décimo segundo y último segmento musical de 1982. Espero que estas muy buenas canciones hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. A lo largo de doce entregas, 1987 estuvo presente durante todo este 2012 con 25 muy buenas canciones. Aquí concluye 1987 en el blog y he querido despedirlo como se merece. Probablemente hayan canciones que han quedado fuera de lado, pero para el 2017 cuando toque el segmento de “Hace 30 años”, volveremos con 25 temas más de ese muy buen año 1987 Y como hice en el 2010 y 2011 en sus posts finales, comparto con ustedes el ranking que en ese mismo año 1987 elaboré en base a mis preferencias, costumbre que inicié en 1978 y que la mantuve hasta 1995. Y durante 12 segmentos irán desfilando muy buenos temas que gozaron de mis preferencias y para solo citar unos nombres, tendremos temas de Cheap Trick, George Harrison, George Michael, INXS, OMD, Elton John, Chicago, Sting, Pat Benatar y Traveling Wilburys, entre varios más. Con este post despedimos al año 1987 y nos encontramos el miércoles 16 de Enero del 2013 con el primer segmento musical de 1988.
