BEE GEES: FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

Llegamos al tercer viernes del mes de octubre, y como es costumbre, hoy toca presentar el segmento dedicado a un tema de los Bee Gees. En esta oportunidad, tenemos un tema que en este año 1993, cumple 20 años de su lanzamiento. Me estoy refiriendo a la extraordinaria canción “For Whom The Bell Tolls”. En ese momento, ya sabía que los Bee Gees habían lanzado un nuevo álbum y ya había visto por cable el video del que fue su primer single, “Paying The Price of Love”, y sonaba bastante interesante. Recuerdo mucho que la escuché por primera vez cuando escuchaba el Ranking Británico en la BBC de Londres por Onda Corta y un lunes anunciaron el nuevo single de los Bee Gees y era precisamente este tema. Le presté mucha atención y me fascinó totalmente. Era una obra maestra y destacaba la hermosa melodía y el perfecto complemento entre Barry y Robin en la interpretación del tema. Barry cantaba con falseto el intro y la estrofa del tema y Robin se encargaba magistralmente de cantar el coro de la canción, con un fondo instrumental majestuoso.  Poco después, el tema se escuchó con bastante frecuencia en Telestereo en el recordado programa de mi entrañable amiga Dianita García, “Tu, Yo y Mis Discos”, y recuerdo que Dianita me contaba lo mucho que se la pedían en el programa. Y luego, mi hermano se compró el CD donde estaba este tema y fue motivo más que suficiente para escuchar la canción todas las veces que quería.

“For Whom the Bell Tolls” fue escrita por Barry, Robin y Maurice Gibb y producida por los Bee Gees. Fue incluida en el album “SIZE ISN’T EVERYTHING” y lanzada como single en Noviembre de 1993, llegando al N° 4 en UK. Además fue N° 1 en Brasil, N° 6 en Irlanda, N° 10 en Bélgica, N° 20 en Holanda, N° 52 en Alemania y N° 109 en USA. El estilo de esta épica canción fue el que predominó en este álbum, que ellos describieron como un retorno a su sonido antes de “Saturday Night Fever”. Y cuando el álbum ya había desaparecido de los charts británicos, el éxito de este single generó que en diciembre de 1993, el álbum retornara a los charts en el N° 23, el cual fue considerado por muchos como uno de sus mejores álbumes luego del mega éxito de 1978. 

En lo que concierne a su performance en vivo, para este álbum, el trío no realizó gira promocional alguna debido a algunos problemas de salud de Barry –recién volverían a hacer gira en 1997-, pero tuvieron algunas presentaciones aisladas y en algunos shows de TV en donde interpretaron este gran tema. Y en la gira del “One Night Only” en 1997, 1998 y 1999, no fue incluida en el set list de sus shows. Han transcurrido ya 20 años de la aparición de esta majestuosa canción y todavía sigue en el recuerdo de los fans, y en mi opinión personal, junto con "Alone", son los mejores temas de los Bee Gees en la década del 90. Hasta el próximo mes de Noviembre, en donde como un adelanto de lo que habrá en el 2014, tendremos el primer single del album "SPIRITS HAVING FLOWN", a los 35 años de su lanzamiento.
