MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 15 AÑOS (1998-II)

Hemos llegado al segundo y último segmento dedicado a 1998, hace 15 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 35 años de edad. Ya tuvimos un primer segmento en el mes de Mayo con dos muy buenas canciones y definitivamente, este mes de diciembre era el mes idóneo para presentar el segmento final de 1998. Y para el final, hemos reservado tres buenas canciones que tuvieron mucho éxito hace 15 años.

1.- I DON'T WANT TO MISS A THING (Aerosmith).- Entre los años 1993 y 1994, la banda Aerosmith volvió a primeros planos de popularidad con sus hits “Amazing”, “Crying” y “Crazy”. Pero fue en 1998 cuando a través de un tema de película, el grupo alcanzó llegar a la cima de los charts mundiales con la canción “I Don’t want To Miss A Thing”, del film “Armageddon”. Aunque la película me gustó cuando la ví, pero era para pasar el rato nomás, y sin duda, la canción contribuyó con el éxito del film, y viceversa. Recuerdo que en el cable, la pasaban a cada rato en el MTV Latino, y era una muy buena balada con fuerza melódica y con el estilo característico de Aerosmith, siguiendo la línea musical de sus hits anteriores en esa década del 90.

“I Don't Want to Miss a Thing” fue escrita por Diane Warren y producida por Matt Serletic y fue el tema principal del film “Armageddon”, protagonizado por Bruce Willis y Ben Affleck. Fue lanzada como single el 18 de Agosto de 1998 y se convirtió en el mayor éxito de Aerosmith en su carrera, llegando al Nª 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 5 de Setiembre de 1998 por 4 semanas. También fue Nª 1 en Australia, Austria, Alemania, Irlanda, Italia, Noruega y Suiza, Nª 2 en Canadá y Suecia, Nª 3 en Bélgica, Holanda y Finlandia, Nª 4 en UK y Nª 8 en Francia. El tema obtuvo una nominación al Oscar como Mejor Tema de Película y ganó un MTV Movie Award como Mejor Canción de Película en 1999. Sin duda, el tema llevó a Aerosmith a nueva generación de fans que descubrieron así su música. 15 años después, recordemos este muy buen tema de película.

2.-  THE WAY (Fastball).- Voy a ser absolutamente sincero. En 1998, escuché ésta canción y me gustó, pero nunca supe quién la cantaba ni su título. Con los años, cuando la escuchaba, la identificaba, pero seguía sin saber su nombre. Y gracias a un amigo queenero uruguayo Pablo, quien escribe sus comentarios en el blog con regularidad, me sugirió que sería bueno si en algún segmento de 1998, incluyese la canción “The Way” de un grupo llamado Fastball. Honestamente no ubicaba ni el título ni el grupo, pero cuando ví el video en Youtube, de inmediato la ubiqué como esa canción que me había gustado hace 15 años. Y por supuesto, decidí hacerle caso a Pablo, e incluirla en este segmento final de 1998. El tema es bastante bueno y su ritmo caracteriza a la canción, dentro de un estilo moderno acorde con la década, pero bien elaborado. 

“The Way” fue escrita por el bajista del grupo, Tony Scalzo y producida por Julian Raymond y Fastball. Fue lanzada como single principal del álbum “ALL THE PAIN MONEY CAN BUY”, el 24 de Febrero de 1998, llegando al Nª 4 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue Nª 1 en Canadá y en el U.S. Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks por 7 semanas, Nª 2 en el U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, Nª 7 en Suecia, Mª 15 en Noruega, Nª 21 en UK, Nª 25 en el U.S. Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, Nª 28 en Italia, Nª 36 en Suiza y Nª 66 en Alemania. Sobre la letra del tema, trata sobre una pareja mayor de esposos, que deciden dejar todo para empacar e irse manejando. En el camino, el carro choca y ellos siguen caminando a pie. Han pasado 15 años, y vale la pena evocar ésta muy buena canción.

3.- IRIS (Goo Goo Dolls).- Al igual como me sucedió con el tema anterior, escuché en 1988 la canción “Iris”, pero sin saber en ese momento cómo se llamaba y quién la cantaba. Solo sabía que era un tema de la película “City Of Angels”, nada más. Y no hace mucho, cuando estaba revisando en Youtube canciones para tomar en cuenta para el segmento final de este año 98, me dí con la grata sorpresa de encontrarla y saber que la cantaba el grupo Goo Goo Dolls. De inmediato, la reservé para la entrega final de esta sección musical. Me encantó la melodía del tema y la muy buena interpretación, con fuerza y sentimiento. De lo mejor que escuché en la década del 90.

“Iris” fue escrita por John Rzeznik y producida por Rob Cavallo y Goo Goo Dolls. Fue escrita originalmente para el soundtrack del film “City Of Angels” y después fue incluido en el álbum “DIZZY UP THE GIRL”. Fue lanzada como single el 7 de Abril de 1998, llegando al Nª 9 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue Nª 1 en Australia, Canadá, Italia y en el U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks por 5 semanas, Nª 8 en el U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks, Nº 16 e Nueva Zelanda, Nª 22 en el U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary y Nº 34 en Suecia. Luego de 15 años, es momento de evocar nuevamente esta gran canción.

Y como punto final de este segmento dedicado a 1998, he querido incluir una trilogía musical con tres muy buenas canciones que tuvieron mucho éxito hace 20 años. Esta trilogía comprende los temas “Closing Time” de Semisonic,  “Perfect” del grupo Smashing Pumpkins, y “Frozen” de Madonna. Espero que lo disfruten.

Este ha sido el último segmento musical de 1998. Espero que estas tres canciones y la trilogía final hayan sido de su completo agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. A lo largo de dos entregas, 1993 nos acompañó a lo largo de este 2013 con ocho muy buenas canciones. Aquí se despide 1998 en el blog y dentro de 5 años retornará en el segmento de “Hace 20 Años”. En el 2014, le estaremos dando la bienvenida al año 1999 en este segmento musical de "Hace 15 Años", y tendremos dos segmentos musicales dedicados a 1999 y con temas que merecen ser posteados en el blog. Desfilarán artistas y grupos como Santana, Blondie, Garbage y Lenny Kravitz, entre otros. Será hasta el 2014 en que estaremos retornando en el blog con este segmento de hace 15 años. Hasta entonces.
