MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 20 AÑOS (1993-XII)

Hemos llegado al décimo segundo y último segmento musical de 1993, hace 20 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 30 años de edad. A lo largo de todo el año 2013, 1993 nos ha acompañado de manera infaltable cada mes y han desfilado 26 canciones en este segmento desde el mes de enero. Hoy concluye un buen año musical que trajo muy buenos temas y gratos recuerdos. Y reservando lo mejor para el final, hemos incluido tres muy buenas canciones que tuvieron un enorme suceso hace 20 años.

1.-  I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT) (Meat Loaf).-  Sin lugar a dudas, una de las canciones que causó sensación hace 20 años y que la rompió a nivel mundial fue “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” del norteamericano Meat Loaf. En lo personal, no sabía mucho de la trayectoria musical de este regordete cantante, y recuerdo haber visto un video de un tema suyo en los 80’s, y algo que destacaba era la potencia de su voz. En 1993, luego de 6 años de su anterior álbum, Meat Loaf retornaba triunfalmente al mundo de la música con este gran tema, el cual escuché por primera vez en Radio Doble Nueve y me enganchó desde el principio por su fuerza, su buen ritmo melódico y la gran interpretación de Meat Loaf. Recuerdo también que mi gran amiga Dianita García la difundió bastante en su programa “Tu, Yo y Mis Discos” en Telestereo. Pero si hubo algo que catapultó esta canción y la elevó por todo lo alto, fue su video clip. Fue sencillamente espectacular, muy bien realizado y filmado como si fuera cine, y basándose en la historia de “La Bella y la Bestia”. Realmente, no fue extraño que este tema se convirtiera en mi tema favorito de 1993 y muy por encima del resto.

“I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)” fue escrita y producida por Jim Steinman –el mismo que compuso “Total Eclypse Of The Heart” y “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”. Fue lanzada como primer single del album “BAT OUT OF HELL ii: BAT INT HELL” en setiembre de 1993, llegando al Nª 1 en UK por 7 semanas, siendo Disco del ño 1993 en UK. También fue Nª 1 en USA, según Billboard, por 5 semanas, y en Australia, Austria, Bélgica, Canadá, Alemania, Irlanda, Holanda, Nueva Zelanda, Noruega, Suecia y Suiza, Nª 4 en Francia y Nª 0 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts. En la parte final del tema, se escucha una voz femenina que canta a dúo con Meat Loaf y que en los créditos del álbum figuró como “Mrs. Loud”, quien era la cantante Lorraine Crosby. Sin embargo, la sensual morena que aparece en el video no es ella, sino la actriz Dana Patrick, quien hace mímica de la parte cantada por Lorraine Crosby. En vivo, Meat Loaf interpretaba esta parte con la americana Patti Russo. Por otro lado, el título del tema siempre generó curiosidad entre el público por saber qué era la palabra final “that”. El mismo Meat Loaf ha comentado que la pregunta “¿Qué es “that”?” es algo que todo el mundo le pregunta. En cuanto el video clip, fue dirigido por Michael Bay y filmado en Los Angeles, California en Julio de 1993. Finalmente, el tema le hizo ganar a Meat Loaf un Grammy como Mejor Performance Vocal Masculina Rock. 20 años después, es momento de recordar esta joya de canción.

2.- HUMAN WHEELS (John Mellencamp).-  Sin duda alguna, la década del 80 fue muy exitosa para John Mellencamp. Al ingresar a los 90’s, John seguía siempre fiel a su estilo rockero de garage, aunque con menos éxito que la década anterior. Algo que llamó mucho mi atención fue cuando en 1993, cuando estaba escuchando Radio Doble Nueve y en eso, anunciaron lo nuevo de John Mellencamp. Era la canción “Human Wheels” y de inmediato paré la oreja y me puse a escucharla y realmente me pareció una gran canción, en donde iba un poco más de allá de su estilo rockero de siempre, con un sonido un poco más moderno, con una impecable instrumentación y una muy buena interpretación de John. Aquí tuvo regular difusión en Radio Miraflores y Telestereo, en el programa “Tu, Yo y Mis Discos”. En lo personal, me pareció una de las mejores canciones creadas por John Mellencamp y mi tema favorito de John en los 90’s.

“Human Wheels” fue escrita por John Mellencamp y George Greene. El tema fue extraído de un poema de un amigo de John, George Green, que había escrito como un elogio por la muerte de su abuelo. Al respecto, en una entrevista en el 2008, John señaló: “El no tenía intención de usarla como una canción. Me la había leído y le dije ‘Estas son las mejores letras que hayas escrito’. El le contestó, “No son letras”, y yo le dije, “puedo convertirlas en letras’. Las tomé y las edité y escribí el coro”. Fue producida por John Mellencamp, Malcolm Burn, David Leonard y Mike Wanchic, e incluida en el álbum “HUMAN WHEELS” y lanzada como single en setiembre de 1993, llegando al Nª 48 en USA, según Bilboard, y al Nª 2 en el USA Album Rock Tracks. Han pasado 20 años de esta canción y sigue siendo una de mis favoritas de este gran rockero. Y la recordamos una vez más en el blog.

Y como punto final de este segmento dedicado a 1993, he querido incluir una trilogía musical con tres canciones que tuvieron mucho éxito aquí en nuestro medio y que se escucharon de manera regular permanente en las diferentes emisoras de radio hace 20 años. Esta trilogía comprende los temas “Creep” del grupo británico Radiohead,  “Mr. Jones” del grupo Counting Crows, y “Stay (Faraway So Close” de U2. Espero que lo disfruten.

Este ha sido el décimo segundo y último segmento musical de 1993. Espero que estas tres canciones y la trilogía final hayan sido de su completo agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. A lo largo de doce entregas, 1993 nos acompañó a lo largo de este 2013 con 32 muy buenas canciones. Aquí se despide 1993 en el blog y dentro de 5 años retornará en el segmento de “Hace 25 Años”. A partir de enero del 2014, le estaremos dando la bienvenida al año 1994 en este segmento musical de "Hace 20 Años", y tendremos doce segmentos musicales dedicados a 1994 que irán en los siguientes 12 meses y con temas que merecen ser posteados en el blog. 1994 fue un buen año musical, y también desfilarán artistas y grupos como Ace Of Base, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Cranberries, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Pretenders, Wet Wet Wet, Bon Jovi, Amy Grant y Enigma, entre otros. Será hasta el miércoles 29 de enero del 2014 en que estaremos retornando en el blog con este segmento de hace 20 años. Hasta entonces.
