MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 35 AÑOS (1979-III)

Llegamos a la primera semana del mes de Febrero, y nuevamente tenemos en esta semana dos segmentos musicales más dedicados a 1979, hace 35 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 16 años de edad y estaba en mi último año escolar. En este mes de San Valentín en que se celebra el mes del amor y la amistad, he elegido dos segmentos con temas apropiados para este mes, y comenzamos el día de hoy con dos muy hermosas baladas que hace 35 años tuvieron buena difusión en las radios locales.

1.-  LOVES TAKES TIME (Orleans).-  Recuerdo mucho que en 1975, hubo una muy bella canción llamada “Dance With Me” del grupo Orleans, que sonó regular en las radios. Y en 1979, volvieron a tener un tema que desde que lo escuché por primera vez en Radio Panamericana –cuando era una radio de verdad-, y que se titulaba “Love Takes Time”. Me gustó mucho por su muy bella melodía que era una brisa de aire fresca dentro del panorama musical que en ese año estuvo dominado por la música disco. Y cada vez que escucho este tema, me acuerdo de la recordada DJ de Panamericana, Susana Alcántara y su programa de los sábados en la mañana cuando presentaba el Ranking de las 30 Más. Inolvidables épocas. Y aunque no fue hit masivo en nuestro medio, pero se dejó escuchar en diversas radios locales, siendo suficiente para instalarse en las preferencias musicales de este servidor. La canción fue escrita por Larry Hoppen y Marilyn Mason y producida por Roy Cicala y Orleans. Fue incluida en el álbum “FOREVER” y lanzada como single en la primera mitad de 1979, llegando al Nª 11 en USA, según Billboard, y siendo su tema más popular sin su cantante principal, John Hall. Han transcurrido 35 años de este bello tema y cae perfecto para recordarla en este mes de San Valentín.

2.- LOVE IS THE ANSWER (England Dan & John Ford Coley).-  Definitivamente, otra bella canción que siempre lo asocio con ese recordado programa del Ranking de las 30 Más de Radio Panamericana, de la recordada Susana A, fue “Love Is The Answer” de England Dan & John Ford Coley. Allí la escuché por primera vez y me encantó por el gran feeling que emanaba de la canción. Los intérpretes eran en ese entonces totalmente desconocidos para mí, pero cantaban con harto sentimiento. Y al igual que el tema anterior, tuvo una regular difusión en las radios locales, sin llegar a ser un mega hit. “Love Is the Answer” fue originalmente escrita por Todd Rundgren para su banda Utopia, algo que sinceramente ignoraba. Sin embargo, la version de England Dan & John Ford Colley alcanzó un mayor éxito. Fue incluida en el álbum “DR. HECKLE & MR. JIVE”, y fue lanzáda como single, llegando al Nª 10 en USA, según Billboard, y al Nª 1 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts  por 2 semanas en Mayo de 1979. Sobre el tema, John Ford Coley señaló: "De todas las canciones que lanzamos como singles, ésta fue mi favorita. Primero que nada, la canción tenía una base clásica y en el medio, tenía una sección de góspel, la cual yo amaba”. Y una de las más gratas sorpresas que viví en el concierto de Ringo Starr en noviembre del año pasado, fue cuando en la última parte del show, Tod Rungren anunció que interpretaría un tema clásico de su banda Utopía. Cuando comenzó a cantar el tema, me parecía conocido y cuando llegó a la parte del coro, al toque la identifiqué y me vinieron los recuerdos de 1979, y lo disfruté al máximo. 35 años después, evocamos nuevamente esta muy hermosa canción.
