MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 30 AÑOS (1984-VII)

Tras el segmento musical publicado el día de ayer, hoy jueves continuamos con una trilogía musical más dedicada a 1984 en este mes del quinto aniversario del blog. Ayer presentamos a una muy banda norteamericana, The Cars, y para el día de hoy, he querido incluir tres muy buenas canciones de la recordada agrupación británica Duran Duran, que fue una de las que más destacó en el panorama musical hace 30 años. Es más, en esos años en que hubo un gran número de grupos y artistas británicos que destacaron en los charts norteamericanos, quien encabezó esta arremetida británica, fue precisamente Duran Duran.

1.-  THE REFLEX (Duran Duran).-  Luego del gran éxito que Duran Duran tuvo con el álbum “RIO” en 1982 y 1983, a finales del 83, lanzaron su siguiente álbum “SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER”, y francamente la rompieron y su fama quedó totalmente consolidada en todo el mundo. Incluso llegó hasta hablarse de la Duranmanía por la apabullante popularidad de este grupo británico, tanto en las ventas de su álbum y sus singles, como en su ubicación en los primeros lugares de los charts mundiales, así como por la calidad de sus videos que fueron de vanguardia en los 80’s. Y dentro de este álbum, indiscutiblemente su single más exitoso e incluso el más exitoso de su carrera fue “The Reflex”. Su ritmo era bastante contagiante y aquí en nuestro medio, fue escuchada y difundida de manera regular en todas las emisoras de radio. Asimismo, su video fue visto con bastante frecuencia en los programas musicales de TV de ese entonces. Sin duda, fue uno los mayores hits de ese año 1984.

“The Reflex” fue escrita por Duran Duran y producida por Duran Duran, Alex Sadkin y Ian Little. Fue lanzada como tercer y último single del álbum “SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER” el 16 de Abril de 1984 en todo el mundo y el 21 de Abril en USA, llegando al N° 1 en USA el 23 de Junio por 2 semanas. La banda quería que fuera el primer single de ese álbum pero al sello discográfico no le gustaba la línea cantada de “why don’t you use it” y pensaba que podría estorbar que fuera un hit exitoso. También llegó al N° 1 en UK el 5 de Mayo por 4 semanas, así como en Bélgica, el Eurochart Hot 100, Irlanda y Holanda, N° 3 en Canadá, N° 4 en Australia, N° 6 en Nueva Zelanda, N° 7 en Polonia, N° 8 en Alemania, N° 10 en Suiza, N° 11 en Austria e Italia, N° 14 en España y N° 15 en Francia. Y en cuanto al video clip del tema, fue filmado durante el Sing Blue Silver Tour en el Maple Leaf Gardens, en Toronto, Ontario, Canadá, el 5 de Marzo de 1984, y fue dirigido por Russell Mulcahy. 30 años después, es momento de recordar este gran hit de Duran Duran.

2.- NEW MOON ON MONDAY (Duran Duran).- Antes que la anterior canción causara furor en todo el mundo, el single que la precedió fue el buen tema “New Moon On Monday”. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, se escuchó bastante en Radio Doble Nueve y en menor grado en el resto de emisoras locales. El tema me gustó por su buen ritmo y su base melódica y mantenía ese estilo impuesto por Duran Duran en los años previos. El tema fue escrito por Duran Duran y producido por Duran Duran, Ian Little y Alex Sadkin, siendo lanzado como segundo single del álbum “SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER” el 14 de Enero de 1984, y llegando al N° 10 en USA; según Billboard. Además fue N° 4 en Canadá y Nueva Zelanda, N° 5 en Irlanda, N° 9 en UK, N° 26 en Holanda y N° 48 en Australia. En cuando al video clip del tema, fue dirigido por Brian Grant y filmado en la primera semana de enero de 1984 en la villa de Noyers en Francia. Aunque en una entrevista, tanto Andy Taylor como Nick Rhodes comentaron que es el video que menos le gusta a la banda y Taylor señaló en sus memorias: “Todos ... la odian, particularmente la espantosa escena al final, donde todos bailamos juntos. Aún hoy día, me da vergüenza y dejo la habitación si alguien la pone”. Han pasado 30 años y vale la pena evocar nuevamente esta canción.

3.-  UNION OF THE SNAKES (Duran Duran).- Cerramos esta trilogía musical con el tema que fue el primer single del álbum “SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER”: “Union Of The Snakes”. El tema fue escrito por Duran Duran y producido por Duran Duran, Ian Little y Alex Sadkin, siendo lanzado como single el 17 de Octubre de 1983, y llegando al N°3 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 2 en Canadá, N° 3 en UK, N° 4 en Australia, N° 5 en Irlanda, N° 8 en Noruega y N° 16 en Suecia y España. En entrevistas posteriores, Simon Le Bon manifestó que la canción era una referencia al sexo tántrico y el baterista Roger Taylor señaló que el ritmo y la parte de la batería estuvo basada en el tema “Let’s Dance” de David Bowie. Y en cuanto al video clip del tema, fue concebido por Russell Mulcahy y dirigida por Simon Milne. Tres décadas después, recordemos este gran hiy de Duran Duran.

Este ha sido el sétimo segmento musical de 1984. Espero que estos tres recordados hits de Duran Duran hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus comentarios.
