HACE 50 AÑOS (1964-V)

Llegamos al primer sábado del mes de Octubre, y siendo mes par, hoy corresponde presentar el segmento musical dedicado al año 1964, hace 50 años. En esta ocasión, tendremos dos canciones de dos recordados grupos vocales que triunfaron hace medio siglo.

1.- RAG DOLL (The Four Seasons).- Uno de los grupos corales más destacados en la primera mitad de los 60’s fue The Four Seasons, liderado por el gran Frankie Valli. Tras el enorme éxito alcanzado en 1962 con hits como “Sherry” y Big Girls Don’t Cry”, en 1964 alcanzaron nuevamente el éxito con el tema “Rag Doll”, una muy hermosa canción con una bella melodía en donde una vez más, destacaba las armonías corales de este grupo norteamericano y la impecable interpretación de Frankie Valli. El tema fue escrito por Bob Crewe y Bob Gaudio y producido por Bob Crewe. Fue incluido en el álbum “RAG DOLL” y fue lanzada como single en Junio de 1964, llegando al N° 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 18 de Julio de 1964 por 2 semanas. Además fue N° 1 en Canadá, N° 2 en UK y N° 4 en Irlanda. 50 años después, recordamos este gran tema sesentero.

2.- DANCING IN THE STREETS (Martha & The Vandellas).- La primera vez que escuché la canción “Dancing In The Streets” no fue en su versión original, sino en la versión que grabó el grupo norteamericano Van Halen en los 80’s. Años después, salió un nuevo cover de este tema que fue interpretado por Mick Jagger y David Bowie. Y al final, llegué a escuchar la versión original que era cantada por el grupo Martha and the Vandellas, y en honor a la verdad, me pareció superior a sus buenas copias. El tema fue compuesto por Marvin Gaye, William "Mickey" Stevenson y Ivy Jo Hunter, y en principio para la cantante Kim Weston, quien desechó la canción. Luego de ello, se lo ofrecieron a Martha Reeves, quien aceptó y así fue grabado por Martha & The Vandellas, siendo producido por William "Mickey" Stevenson y grabado en Hitsville, USA, el 19 de Junio de 1964. Fue incluido en el álbum “DANCE PARTY” y lanzado como single el 31 de Julio de 1964, llegando al N° 2 en USA, según Billboard, y al N° 4 en UK. Han transcurrido cinco décadas de esta canción y es momento de evocarla en su versión original.
