HACE 50 AÑOS (1965-V)

Llegamos al primer miércoles del mes de Octubre y hoy toca presentar el segmento musical bimensual dedicado al año 1965, hace 50 años. Para el día de hoy, he querido elegir dos recordadas canciones de The Temptations y Shirley Ellis.

1.-  MY GIRL (The Temptations).-  Definitivamente, una de las más hermosas baladas provenientes del sello Motown Records fue el gran clásico “My Girl” de The Temptations. El tema fue escrito y producido por Smokie Robinson y Ronald White, ambos miembros de The Miracles, y fue grabado el 25 de Setiembre, 10 y 17 de Noviembre de 1964, siendo lanzado como single el 21 de Diciembre de 1964, llegando al N° 1 en USA a inicios de 1965. Fue incluido en el álbum “THE TEMPTATIONS SING SMOKEY” y para componer esta canción, Robinson se inspiró en su esposa, Claudette. Es bueno indicar que esta versión grabada del tema, fue el primer single de The Temptations en mostrar a David Ruffin en la voz principal. Previamente, Eddie Kendricks y Paul Williams habían sido la voz principal y cuando en una presentación del grupo, Smokey Robinson escuchó a Ruffin, quedó impresionado y pensó que podía escribir una canción perfecta para la voz de Ruffin y que podía ser un hit. Así decidió producir un single con Ruffin en la voz principal, y tras persuadir a los otros miembros del grupo, Robinson tuvo a The Temptations grabando el tema, en vez de The Miracles, quienes originalmente iban a grabarlo. Medio siglo después, es momento de recordar esta muy buena canción.

2.-  THE NAME GAME (Shirley Ellis).-  Recuerdo mucho que escuché por primera vez la canción “The Name Game” de Shirley Ellis fue en el programa “Memories” de mi gran amiga Dianita García. Me parecía un tema ocurrente, gracioso, que jugaba con algunos nombres en las estrofas del tema, e incluso Diana a veces tarareaba el tema en su programa, agregando algunos nombres. El tema fue escrito por Shirley Ellis y Lincoln Chase y producido por Charles Catello. Fue lanzado como single a fines de 1964, llegando al N° 3 en USA, según Billboard, en 1965. Han transcurrido 50 años y vale la pena recordar este buen hit.

Este ha sido el quinto segmento musical de 1965. Espero que estos buenos temas hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios.
