MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 30 AÑOS (1985-XIII)

Llegamos al tercer miércoles del mes de Octubre y toca presentar el segmento musical dedicado al año 1985, hace 30 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 22 años de edad. El pasado 2 de Octubre, estuvo cumpliendo 64 años, el gran Sting, y por ello, para el día de hoy, he querido elegir dos buenas canciones de su álbum “THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES”.

1.-  IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY, SET THEM FREE (Sting).-  Como señalé en el post que le dediqué a Sting en su cumpleaños, tras el mega éxito de The Police con el álbum “SYNCHRONICITY”, al saberse que Sting iba a lanzar su álbum solista, esperaba –equivocadamente- algo al estilo de Police. Y cuando escuché el primer single “If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free”, inicialmente no me gustó porque esperaba de él, algo más rockero y menos jazz o soul. Varios años después, comencé a valorar esta canción, la cual tenía un ritmo con bastante influencia jazzera. El tema fue escrito por Sting y producido por Sting y Peter Smith. Fue lanzado como primer single del “THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES” el 9 de Julio de 1985, llegando al N° 3 en USA, según Billboard, al N° 1 en el USA Album Rock Tracks por 3 semanas, y N° 26 en UK. Al respecto, en una entrevista, Sting manifestó que escribió este tema como un “antídoto” al tema de Police de 1983, “Every Breath You Take”. En cuanto al video clip del tema, fue dirigido por Godley & Creme en 1985. Fue filmado en París en una prueba de sonido, con cada uno de los músicos actuando de manera separada y luego todo lo filmado fue unido para la versión final del clip. 30 años después, recordamos este buen tema de Sting.

2.-  FORTRESS AROUND YOUR HEART (Sting).-  El siguiente single que Sting lanzó fue “Fortress Around Your Heart”, la cual me gustó muchísimo desde que la escuché por primer vez en Radio Doble Nueve, por su muy buen ritmo melódico y con la soberbia interpretación de Sting. Recuerdo que ví su video en el programa “La Máquina del Rock” en Canal 4 y se convirtió en uno de mis dos temas favoritos del álbum –el otro es “Russians”. Fue escrita por Sting y producida por Sting y Peter Smith, siendo lanzada como single el 1° de Octubre de 1985, llegando al N° 8 en USA, según Billboard, al N° 1 en el USA Album Rock Tracks por 2 semanas y al N° 49 en UK. El tema fue inspirado en el divorcio de Sting y en el dolor que sintió luego del fin de su primer matrimonio y Sting lo escribió en el estudio en Barbados en 1985. En una entrevista para la revista “Magazine” en 1985, Sting dijo: “‘Fortress’ es acerca del apaciguamiento, acerca de tender puentes entre individuos. La imagen central es un campo minado que has puesto alrededor de esta otra persona para tratar de protegerla. Luego te das cuenta que tienes que caminar a través de ello. Pienso que es uno de los mejores coros que he escrito”.  Finalmente, el tema cuenta con la participación de Branford Marsalis en el solo de saxo.  Han transcurrido tres décadas de esta canción y es momento de escucharla en el blog.

Este ha sido el décimo tercer segmento musical de 1985. Espero que estos dos muy buenos temas de Sting hayan sido de su agrado. Como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. Y como un plus en este post, he querido incluir el video del tema “Love Is The Seventh Wave” y nuevamente, “Russians”.
