MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 30 AÑOS - I

1979. Un año que significó el final de una etapa en mi vida, la etapa escolar. Hace 30 años terminaba el colegio en el “San Andrés”, como ya he comentado en algunos anteriores posts. Y fue el año en que me preparé en la Academia “Programa 2000” para postular al año entrante a la Universidad. Fue el año en que no dejaba de ir a las fiestas organizadas por otros colegios y la cual íbamos en grupo y nos divertíamos duro. Y por supuesto, fue un año en que mi afición por la música se consolidó y hubieron diversos temas que calaron hondo en mis preferencias. Y hoy comienzo este segmento dedicado a mis canciones favoritas de 1979 con 3 canciones que hasta ahora me emociona escucharlas y me trasladan a esa época maravillosa vivida 30 años atrás.

Aprovecho para decirles que como mañana jueves 10 estoy viajando por 4 días por trabajo con mi hermano Alex a Quito, Ecuador, mi siguiente post irá el lunes 14, y como siempre, con algo vinculado a QUEEN. Espero que estas tres canciones elegidas sean de su más completo agrado.

1.- STUMBLIN’IN (Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman).- La primera vez que la escuché fue en el verano de 1979 y me encantó desde el inicio y sobretodo me sorprendió ver que quien cantaba esa melódica y rítmica canción era Suzie Quatro, rockera con varios hits años atrás y que siempre había mostrado una imagen rebelde y desenfadada. Pero en este tema, cantaba a dúo con Chris Norman y sinceramente me flechó La canción. Y aquí en las radios limeñas fue un éxito rotundo en ese verano y recuerdo que la ví por primera vez en la Elección de la Más Más del Verano de 1979 en pantalla gigante en la Concha Acústica del Campo de Marte. Pero desafortunadamente, la imagen no se veía tan nítida pero el sonido fue bueno. Meses después, ví por primera vez su video cuando Gerardo Manuel estrenó un jueves su programa “FM 7” y el primer video fue precisamente “Stumblin’in”. Y allí ví clara y nítidamente el video y me contagió la alegría con la que Suzie cantaba el tema. Lanzado en Enero de 1979, el single llegó al Nº 4 en el Ranking USA, según Billboard.

Ese mismo año 79, Suzie Quatro conseguiría un hit más con el excelente tema “If You Can’t Give Me Love” y en 1981 con “Rock Hard”, y luego su popularidad bajaría. Pero, 30 años después, su mayor hit “Stumblin’in” todavía sigue en el corazón de sus fans y de aquellos que estamos en Base 4 y que disfrutamos en ese 1979 con la melodía contagiante de esa inolvidable canción.

2.- WE DON'T TALK ANYMORE (Cliff Richard).- En la segunda mitad del 79, a través de esta canción fue la primera vez que escuché de Cliff Richard. En mi desconocimiento, creí que se trataba de un artista nuevo y juvenil y vaya que estaba equivocado. Por un lado, Cliff era un artista cuyos orígenes se remontaban a fines de la década del 50 con el inmortal tema "Move It", en los 60's al lado de The Shadows y en 1976 había logrado un hit con "Devil Woman". Pero ignoraba eso. Y además, aunque su apariencia era juvenil, pero no era un muchacho que recién comenzaba, ya que tenía 39 años. Cuando escuché ese tema por primera vez, me gustó su ritmo pop bailable y Cliff se lucía con falsetes durante el tema. Cuando ví el video en "Disco Club", me imaginé ver a un tipo mayor -ya sabía que tenía 39 años-, y me sorprendió ver un artista con vitalidad y energía. El tema se convirtió en el disco más vendido de Clif Richard en su carrera, a nivel mundial y fue Nº 1 en UK por 4 semanas y Nº 1 en Alemania por 5 semanas y Nº 7 en el Ranking USA, según Billboard.

Luego Cliff Richard seguiría destacando en los charts británicos logrando Nº 1 en la década del 80 y 90, y actualmente próximo a cumplir 69 años, se mantiene en actividad ofreciendo conciertos en Gran Bretaña y siendo considerado como uno de los pioneros en la historia del rock británico.

3.- GOOD GIRLS DON'T (The Knack).- 1979 fue sin duda el año de "My Sharona" de un nuevo grupo llamado The Knack. El tema fue una sensación y se convirtió en un hit en todo el mundo, y también acá en Perú. Pero hubo una canción de este grupo que cuando la escuché me gustó muchísimo más que "My Sharona", y fue su 2º single: "Good Girls Don't". Me encantó el ritmo del tema, que no era un rock tan frenético como "My Sharona", pero en lo personal, me parecía más elaborado. Me fascinó el intro con la armónica y como el ritmo iba creciendo, y cuando ví el video me sorprendió ver al grupo cantar de un modo más "tranquilo" y no visceral como en el clip de "My Sharona".

El single tuvo éxito, pero en parte fue eclipsada por el mega éxito de su predecesora, y fue lanzada en Agosto del 79 y llegó al Nº 11 en el Ranking USA, según Billboard. Luego en 1980, The Knack tuvo un relativo éxito con los temas "Baby Talks Dirty" y "I Want Ya", y en el 82, no tuvieron éxito con los singles "Pay The Devil" y "Boys Go Crazy", y luego de ello, el grupo desapareció por completo.
