MIS CANCIONES NAVIDEÑAS FAVORITAS - II

Faltan 2 días para la Nochebuena y 3 días para la Navidad. Y continúo con este breve segmento musical navideño. Ayer estuve con 3 temas de los Beatles y hoy le toca el turno a tres destacados cantantes británicos, dos de ellos con el título de Sir.

1.- STEP INTO CHRISTMAS (Elton John).- Escrita por Sir Elton John en la música y por Bernie Taupin en las letras, fue lanzado como single en 1973, y llegó al Nº 23 en UK. La primera vez que la escuché fue ya en los 90's cuando me compré un CD con temas navideños de diversos grupos y artistas británicos, CD que aún conservo en la actualidad y que me acompaña en cada Navidad. El tema me gustó y tiene todo el estilo que caracterizó a Elton en esa primera mitad de la década del 70, época que constituyó sus años dorados en la música.

Más adelante, fue incluida como bonus track en el relanzamiento remasterizado del album "CARIBOU" en 1995, aunque ya había sido lanzada en la época del album "GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD". También apareció en los albums de Elton, "Christmas Party", "Rare Masters", "To Be Continued" y "The Best Christmas Album In The World...Ever!".

2.- MISTLETOE AND WINE (Cliff Richard).- Un hermoso tema navideño de 1986, cantado por Sir Cliff Richard. La primera vez que supe de este tema fue cuando iba con frecuencia a Funky Center a visitar a mi gran amigo Robin Nieva para estar al tanto del panorama musical tanto en Gran Bretaña como en USA y ví en el Ranking Británico que esta canción estaba en el tope de las listas británicas por 4 semanas y que a la postre sería también el Disco del Año 1986 en UK. Recién lo escuché en 1994 cuando me compré el CD "PRIVATE COLLECTION" de Cliff Richard y descubrí una maravillosa canción lleno de sonidos navideños y con una letra preciosa. Y me fascinó la canción. Posteriormente Cliff tendría temas navideños en el Nº 1 en UK con "Saviour's Day" y "The Millenium Prayer". Pero, me quedo con la magia de esta encantadora canción.

3.- LAST CHRISTMAS (Wham!).- Cantada por el dúo británico Wham!, conformado por George Michael y Andrew Ridgeley, fue lanzada como por el sello Epic Records en 1984, como un single con doble lado A, junto con "Everything She Wants". Fue escrita por George Michael y ya reflejaba la calidad de George Michael como compositor. Escuché este tema por primera vez en 1985 y desde entonces, es uno de mis temas navideños favoritos de siempre y desde sus acordes iniciales y el feeling que George Michael le pone al cantarlo, la hacen infaltable en cada celebración navideña.

Wham! dominó en los UK Singles Chart en 1984 y las noticias que ellos planeaban un single navideño significó que la batalla por el Nº 1 en Navidad en UK sería entre Wham! y Frankie Goes to Hollywood, otro dúo que destacó en 1984 en los charts británicos. Sin embargo, el proyecto Band Aid, iniciado por Bob Geldof, fue el single Nº 1 en Navidad y Wham! llegó al Nº 2 durante ese lapso y las regalías de las ventas de este single también fueron destinados a la misma causa benéfica, a combatir la hambruna en Etiopía. Pero el single llegó al Nº 1 en otros países y vendió por encima del millón de copias y se convirtió en el single más vendido en la historia de los charts en UK en no llegar al Nº 1. Un año después, se relanzó y llegó al Nº 6.
