MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 30 AÑOS (1985-V)

Continuamos con el doble segmento musical de 1985 en este mes de Abril, iniciado el día de ayer. Para el día de hoy, tenemos un tema benéfico que hizo historia hace 30 años y que alcanzó un mega éxito en todo el mundo. 

1.- WE ARE THE WORLD (USA For Africa).-  Tras la exitosa iniciativa de Bob Geldof con el proyecto Band Aid y el single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” en 1984, que fue un mega hit en UK y en toda Europa, al año siguiente le tocaría el turno a los artistas de USA. Bajo el nombre de USA For Africa, lanzaron un single benéfico para generar fondos para combatir la hambruna en Africa: “We Are The World”. Recuerdo mucho la primera vez que ví el video de esta canción, y no tenía la más mínima idea de la existencia de este tema. Y fue una sorpresa total ya que iban apareciendo uno tras otro, artistas norteamericanos interpretando sus líneas. Gente como Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner y Billy Joel en la primera estrofa, Michael Jackson y Diana Ross en el coro; Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson y Al Jarreau en la segunda estrofa, y luego Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry y Daryl Hall en el segundo coro; y en el puente, Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper y Kim Carnes. Parecía mentira ver tantos artistas juntos en un disco y el video caló hondo en el público y fue realmente un momento único e irrepetible en la música.

“We Are The World” fue escrita por Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie, producida por Quincy Jones y Michael Omartian. Fue incluida en el álbum “WE ARE THE WORLD”, siendo lanzada como single el 7 de Marzo de 1985, logrando un mega éxito a nivel mundial, y llegando al N° 1 en USA el 13 de Mayo de 1984, según Billboard, por 4 semanas y en UK el 20 de abril de 1985 por 2 semanas. Además fue N° 1 en Australia, Bélgica, Canadá, Finlandia, Francia, Irlanda, Italia, Holanda, Nueva Zelanda, Noruega, Sudáfrica, España, Suecia, Suiza y en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 2 en Austria y Alemania, y N° 27 en el US Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. También ganó cuatro Grammys –entre ellos Disco del Año y Canción del Año-, un American Music Award como Canción de Año y un MTV Video Music Award como Mejor Video de Grupo. Han transcurrido 30 años de esta canción y permanece en la memoria colectiva por lo que representó en la lucha contra el hambre en el Africa y por ser la primera vez en que se aglutinó una cantidad interminable de renombrados artistas norteamericanos.

2.- TEARS ARE NOT ENOUGH  (Northern Lights).- A la par de lo que se hizo con USA For Africa, para el álbum “WE ARE THE WORLD”, los artistas canadienses contribuyeron bajo el nombre de Northern Lights también con una canción llamada “Tears Are No Enough”. Tuve oportunidad de escucharla por primera vez en la radio y me gustó mucho la balada que reunía a lo mejor de Canadá. Este proyecto fue organizado por Bruce Allen y el tema fue escrito por David Foster, Jim Vallance, Bryan Adams, Rachel Paiement, Paul Hyde y Bob Rock, Fue grabado el 10 de Febrero de 1985 en Manta Sound Studios, en Toronto, y producido por David Foster, y contó con la participación de artistas de la talla de Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Dan Hill, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Bruce Cockburn, Liberty Silver, Geddy Lee (Rush) y Mike Reno (Loverboy). Fue lanzada como single en Canadá en Marzo de 1985 y llegó al N° 1 en Canadá. Y en su momento, nunca pude ver el video de esta canción y muchos años después, gracias a Youtube, pude ver esa canción que me había gustado tanto hace 30 años.

Este ha sido el quinto segmento musical de 1985. Espero que este par de buenos recuerdos hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, espero sus comentarios.
