MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 35 AÑOS (1980-XII)

Llegamos al segundo miércoles del mes de Noviembre y hoy toca presentar el segmento musical dedicado al año 1980, hace 35 años, cuando quien escribe contaba con 17 años de edad. Para el día de hoy, he querido elegir una trilogía musical con tres recordadas cantantes norteamericanas.

1.-  UPSIDE DOWN (Diana Ross).-  En la segunda mitad de 1980, la gran Diana Ross entró con pie derecho en la década del 80 con el exitoso single “Upside Down”, un tema con bastante ritmo y un estilo bailable. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, sonó bastante en las diversas emisoras de radio locales y también era infaltable en las fiestas de ese entonces. El tema fue escrito y producido por Nile Rodgers y Bernard Edwards –miembros de Chic- y fue lanzado como single principal de su álbum “DIANA”, el 25 de Junio de 1980, llegando al N° 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 6 de Setiembre por 4 semanas. Además fue N° 1 en Australia, Dinamarca, Italia, Nueva Zelanda, Suecia, Suiza, el Eurochart y en el Canada Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 2 en UK, Austria, Francia y Holanda, N° 3 en Bélgica, Finlandia, Alemania e Irlanda, N° 5 en Canadá y N° 15 en España. 35 años después, es momento de recordar este buen hit ochentero.

2.-  NEVER KNEW LOVE LIKE THIS BEFORE (Stephanie Mills).- Otra canción que pegó harto aquí en nuestro medio fue “Never Knew Love Like This Before” de Stephanie Mills. Me acuerdo que su video también fue bastante difundido en los programas musicales de TV en ese momento y fue una de mis favoritas de ese año 80, por su muy buen ritmo melódico. La canción fue escrita y producida por James Mtume y Reggie Lucas, e incluida en el álbum “SWEET SENSATION”. Fue lanzada como single en Enero de 1980, llegando al N° 6 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 1 en Holanda, N° 2 en Bélgica, N° 4 en UK y Australia, N° 5 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 11 en Austria y N° 32 en Canadá. Finalmente, en 1981 obtuvo un Grammy como Mejor Canción R & B y Mejor Performance Vocal Femenina R & B. Han pasado 35 años y vale la pena escuchar este muy grato recuerdo.

3.- HEARTBREAKER (Pat Benatar).- En la primera mitad de la década del 80, la rockera Pat Benatar destacó nítidamente en el panorama musical. Y en el verano de 1980, comenzó a escucharse en nuestro medio su tema “Heartbreaker”, cargado de pura energía y adrenalina, y que sería el primer gran éxito de su carrera. El tema fue escrito por Geoff Gill y Cliff Wade, y originalmente grabado por la inglesa Jenny Darren en 1978. Al año siguiente, Pat Benatar la grabó para su álbum debut “IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT” y fue producida por Mike Chapman y Peter Coleman. Fue lanzada como single en Octubre de 1979, llegando al N° 23 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 14 en Nueva Zelanda y N° 95 en Australia. Luego de 35 años, recordemos este primer gran hit de Pat Benatar.
