MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 30 AÑOS (1984-IX)

Llegamos al segundo miércoles del mes de Julio, y hoy toca presentar el segmento musical dedicado al año 1984, hace 30 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 21 años de edad. El mes pasado tuvimos dos temas solistas de dos de los miembros de los Bee Gees, y para esta ocasión, tendremos dos muy buenas canciones solistas de los dos miembros más importantes de la recordada banda norteamericana STYX: Dennis De Young y Tommy Shaw.

1.- DESERT MOON (Dennis De Young).-  Tras el éxito comercial del album “KILROY WAS HERE” de Styx, al año siguiente, la banda lanzó el álbum en vivo "CAUGHT IN THE ACT" en abril de 1984 -con el single "Music Time"-, y después se tomó un descanso, luego de ciertos conflictos internos, que motivaron el retiro de Tommy Shaw de la banda. Y en ese período, los fans de este buen grupo tuvieron oportunidad de ver trabajos solistas de dos de sus miembros, destacando en primer lugar, el buen tema “Desert Moon” de Dennis DeYoung. Como lo señalé en el post que le dediqué a este gran cantante y tecladista de Styx (http://royaltrilogy.blogspot.com/2014/02/dennis-deyoung-la-voz-de-styx.html), el alma de esta banda y quien le dio su sonido melódico característico fue Dennis DeYoung, y en esta canción, Dennis retomaba ese lado melódico de sus grandes baladas dentro de Styx -como “Babe”, “The Best Of Times” o “Don’t Let It End”. Recuerdo cuando la escuché por primera vez en la radio, pensé que era lo nuevo de Styx, pero se trataba de Dennis DeYoung y ví por primera vez su video en el recordado programa “La Máquina del Rock” que transmitía Canal 4 los sábados por la tarde. Me gustó bastante la canción porque mantenía ese buen nivel que mostraba Styx. La canción fue escrita y producida por Dennis DeYoung e incluida en el álbum “DESERT MOON”. Fue lanzada como single en Setiembre de 1984, llegando al N° 10 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 7 en Canadá y N° 8 en Irlanda. En cuanto al video clip del tema, fue dirigido por Jack Cole y fue filmado en Santa Paula, California. Han transcurrido 30 años de esta canción y es momento de recordarla una vez más.

2.- GIRLS WITH GUNS (Tommy Shaw).-  Como señalé en la anterior canción, tras el lanzamiento del álbum “CAUGHT IN THE ACT” de Styx, Tommy Shaw abandonó la banda por sentirse en desacuerdo con la dirección musical del grupo en esos años. Incluso declinó participar en el video clip del single “Music Time” y solo apareció por 2 segundos al final del video. Ante ello, Tommy se embarcó en un proyecto solista, que finalmente vio la luz en la segunda mitad del 84 con el álbum “GIRLS WITH GUNS”. De este álbum, se extrajo como single la muy buena canción “Girls With Guns”, un tema bien rockero con bastante ritmo y un estilo bien ochentero, el cual tuvo cierta difusión en Radio Doble Nueve. El tema fue escrito por Tommy Shaw y producido por Mike Stone, siendo lanzado como single en Octubre de 1984, llegando al N° 33 en USA, según Billboard, y al N° 6 en el USA Album Rock Tracks. 30 años después, evocamos ésta muy buena canción.

Este ha sido un segmento musical más de 1984. Espero que estos dos muy buenos temas hayan sido de su agrado y los espero con sus comentarios. Y como un plus a este post, he querido incluir ese tema de Styx que fue lanzado en abril de 1984, “Music Time”, para completar la trilogía.
