MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 20 AÑOS (1994-VII)

Llegamos al cuarto viernes del mes de Julio, y corresponde presentar el segmento musical dedicado a 1994, hace 20 años, cuando este servidor contaba con 31 años de edad. En este mes de Julio, para ser más exactos, el próximo sábado 26 de Octubre -dentro de tres días-, estará cumpliendo 71 años Mick Jagger. Por ese motivo, en esta oportunidad, tendremos dos muy buenas canciones del álbum “VOODOO LOUNGE”. 

1.-  LOVE IS STRONG (The Rolling Stones).- Tras el exitoso album “STEEL WHELS” de 1989, los Rolling Stones se tomaron varios años de descanso hasta su siguiente producción musical. Sería en 1994 cuando retornaron triunfalmente en la música con el álbum “VOODOO LOUNGE”. Fue un álbum bastante bueno y con mucho rock, retornando a ese estilo de sus mejores épocas por el cual llegaron a ser considerados como “la banda de rock and roll N° 1 en el mundo”. Muchos lo consideraban como su mejor álbum desde el “EXILE ON MAIN STREET” y estuvo a la altura de las expectativas. Y el primer tema que se escuchó fue “Love Is Strong”, con un buen estilo rockero y con una buena instrumentación, que le daba ese sonido clásico de los Stones. Recuerdo que aquí lo escuché por primera vez en Radio Doble Nueve, y tuvo muy buena difusión en dicha radio. Era el regreso por la puerta grande de los Rolling Stones.

“Love Is Strong” fue escrita por la dupla autoral de Mick Jagger y Keith Richards y producida por Don Was & The Glimmer Twins –Jagger y Richards. El tema fue escrito en Irlanda por Richards y originalmente se titulaba “Love Is Strange”. Al comienzo, en las sesiones de grabación, Ron Wood, Keith Richards, Ivan Neville y el productor Don Was trabajaron la canción mientras Jagger estaba promocionando su álbum solista “WANDERING SPIRIT”. Después de varias tomas, el título se cambió a “Love Is Strong”, y al final Jagger le agregó letras y el uso de la armónica. Así fue lanzada como primer single del “VOODOO LOUNGE” el 5 de Julio de 1994, y tuvo una pobre ubicación en los charts norteamericanos, aunque tuvo mucha popularidad en Europa, llegando al N° 14 en UK. 20 años después, recordamos este buen tema de los Stones.

2.-  OUT OF TEARS (The Rolling Stones).- Cuando escuché completo el album “VOODOO LOUNGE”, definitivamente la canción que más me gustó fue la muy hermosa balada “Out Of Tears”. Era un gran tema que conservaba ese estilo melódico de aquellas joyas musicales de la década del 60 y fue escrita por la dupla autoral Jagger/Richards, aunque realmente fue compuesta por Mick Jagger, quien en una entrevista señaló: “Hay un humor muy triste en esa canción. Los Stones son principalmente una banda de guitarra, pero pienso que con una balada a veces es agradable moverse de eso. Y cuando una canción es escrita en el teclado, tienes una diferente clase de estructura melódica”. Fue grabada en 1993 y 1994 en la casa de Ron Wood en Irlanda, en los Sandymount Studios, y en los A&M Recording Studios, en Los Angeles y producida por Don Was y The Glimmer Twins. Fue lanzada como tercer single del “VOODOO LOUNGE” el 1° de Noviembre de 1994, llegando al N° 60 en USA, según Billboard, y al N° 36 en UK y al N° 14 en el USA Album Rock Tracks. Han transcurrido 20 años y es momento propicio para evocar esta gran canción.

Este ha sido el sétimo segmento musical de 1994. Espero que estos dos muy buenos temas de los Rolling Stones hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. Y como un plus, cerramos este post con una trilogía de temas de ese gran álbum: “You Got Me Rocking”, “New Faces” y “I Go Wild”.
