HACE 30 AÑOS (1986-XVIII)

Siguiendo en este mes de Diciembre, hoy me toca presentarte el décimo octavo y último segmento musical dedicado al año 1986, hace 30 años, cuando quien escribe contaba con 23 años de edad. En efecto, hoy despedimos de manera definitiva al año 1986, que nos acompañó en el blog, tanto en el 2011 como en el 2016, y en donde han desfilado muy buenos temas que forman parte de mis más hermosos recuerdos. Y en este último post, tendremos una trilogía musical, que incluirá las siguientes canciones: “Taken In” del grupo británico Mike + The Mechanics, liderado por Mike Rutherford –bajista de Genesis- e interpretado por el desaparecido Paul Young; “You Can Call Me Al” del gran cantante norteamericano Paul Simon, quien escribió el tema, y que tiene un muy divertido video en donde aparece Chevy Chase; y “Dancing On The Ceiling” de Lionel Richie, tema bailable que fue infaltable en las discotecas hace 30 años.

Este ha sido el último segmento musical correspondiente a 1986. Espero que estas buenas canciones hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. De esta forma, cerramos musicalmente de manera definitiva este año 1986 en el blog, que formó parte de mis años universitarios y que fue parte de mi vida. Ha sido un placer enorme e inmenso, haber revivido este año 1986 de manera mensual. Cuando llegue el 2021 ya no retornará esta sección musical, debido a que creo haber presentado prácticamente todas mis canciones favoritas de 1986. A partir de enero del 2017, estaremos dándole nuevamente la bienvenida al año 1987 en este segmento musical de "Hace 30 Años", que irán de manera mensual y con temas que merecen ser posteados en el blog. Ya en el 2012, ya tuvimos bastantes temas que fueron posteados en la sección “Hace 25 Años” y a partir del 2017, me estaré enfocando preferentemente en canciones que formaron parte de álbumes exitosos.

HACE 30 AÑOS (1986-XVII)

Llegamos al tercer miércoles del mes de Noviembre, y en esta oportunidad, me toca presentarte el segmento musical de 1986, hace 30 años, cuando quien escribe tenía 23 años. Para el día de hoy, he querido elegir para ti dos buenas canciones de dos recordadas bandas británicas.

1.-  CALLING AMERICA (ELO).-  Tras una brillante y prolífica trayectoria musical en la década del 70, la banda británica Electric Light Orchestra –o ELO-, en los 80’s, siguieron vigentes en el panorama musical, pero fueron dejando de lado de manera progresiva, ese sonido orquestal que los caracterizó en los 70’s, y también fue reduciendo su número de miembros, para dar paso a un estilo más moderno, acorde con el sonido ochentero. Y ello fue en detrimento de su presencia en los charts, ya que sus singles no rankeaban bien. Para 1986, sacaron una nueva canción, que en sí no era mala –incluso, a mí me gustaba. Pero costaba reconocer a ELO, y si no era por la voz de Jeff Lynne, fácil podría haber pensado que se trataba de otra banda. El tema fue “Calling America” y tenía un buen ritmo melódico, pero recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, solamente se escuchó en Radio Doble Nueve, y en el resto de radios, pasó desapercibido. Fue escrita y producida por Jeff Lynne, e incluida en el álbum “BALANCE OF POWER”. Fue lanzada como single el 24 de Enero de 1986 en USA y el 21 de Febrero de 1986 en UK, llegando al N° 18 en USA, según Billboard, y al N° 28 en UK. Además, fue N° 10 en Francia, N° 16 en Irlanda, N° 20 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 22 en el USA Album Rock Tracks y Austria, N°31 en Alemania y N° 47 en Australia. 30 años después, es bueno recordar este buen de tema de ELO. 2.-  GO (Asia).-  Tras dos álbumes exitosos en la primera mitad de los 80’s, la banda británica ASIA lanzó su tercera producción musical a fines de 1985, y de allí, a comienzos de 1986, se escuchó su nuevo single, “Go”, un tema con ese sonido rockero con el que Asia se había dado a conocer. Recuerdo que aquí solo se escuchó en Doble Nueve y tuvo muy poca difusión –por no decir nula. El tema fue escrito por John Wetton y Geoff Downes y producido por Mike Stone y Geoff Downes. Fue el primer single del álbum “ASTRA”, llegando apenas al N° 46 en USA, según Billboard, y al N°7 en el USA Album Rock Tracks. Su video, basado en la heroína futurista que aparece en la carátula del álbum, recibió regular difusión en la cadena MTV. Han pasado tres décadas y vale la pena escuchar esta canción poco conocida de Asia. Disfrútala.

Llegamos al tercer miércoles del mes de Octubre, y en esta ocasión, me toca presentarte el segmento musical de 1986, hace 30 años, cuando quien escribe tenía 23 años. Para el día de hoy, he querido elegir para ti dos muy buenas canciones de dos miembros de la recordada banda norteamericana de Boston, The Cars.

1.-  EMOTION IN MOTION (Ric Ocasek).-  Luego del exitoso recopilatorio “GREATEST HITS”, lanzado por The Cars, los miembros de la banda decidieron tomarse un tiempo y dedicarse a proyectos solistas. Fue así como Ric Ocasek, vocalista del grupo y compositoer de todos sus hits, lanzó un álbum solista. Y lo primero que se escuchó fue la muy hermosa balada, “Emotion In Motion”, que tenía todo ese estilo melódico de The Cars, que hacía recordar a la canción, “I’m Not The One”. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, se escuchó bastante en Radio Doble Nueve y tuvo una relativa difusión. El tema fue escrito por Ric Ocasek y producido por Ric Ocasek, Chris Hughes y Ross Cullum. Fue lanzado como primer single del álbum “THIS SIDE OF PARADISE”, llegando al N° 15 en USA, según Billboard. Además, fue N° 1 en el USA Album Rock Tracks, N° 8 en el USA Afult Contemporary Charts y N° 35 en Nueva Zelanda. Y adicionalmente, aunque era un álbum solista de Ric Ocasek, pero contó con la colaboración de otros miembros de The Cars. En este tema, Greg Hawkes participó en los teclados, y Benjamin Orr estuvo en los coros, y además, contó con Roland Orzabal –de Tears For Fears- en la guitarra. A modo de información, el grupo se volvería a reunir en 1987 para el álbum “DOOR TO DOOR”. 30 años después, es grato escuchar este hermoso tema. Disfrútalo.

2.-  STAY THE NIGHT (Benjamin Orr).-  Al igual que Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr también lanzó un álbum solista en 1986, que fue su debut en solitario, del cual se extrajo su mayor hit solista, “Stay The Night”, una muy hermosa balada al estilo de “Drive” de The Cars. Recuerdo que aquí en nuestro medio, se escuchó regular en Radio Doble Nueve y Telestereo, y los que seguíamos a esta gran banda de Boston, nos inquietaba saber si estos proyectos solistas de Ocasek y Orr, podrían significar un próximo final de la banda. Felizmente, al año siguiente, esas conjeturas quedaron solo en eso, ya que lanzarían el que a la postre, sería su última producción musical. El tema fue escrito por Benjamin Orr y Diane Grey Page, y producido por Mike Shipley, Ben Orr y Larry Klein. Fue incluido en el álbum “THE LACE” y lanzado como single en Noviembre de 1986, llegando al N° 24 en USA, según Billboard. Como se sabe, Benjamin Orr nos dejó para siempre un 3 de Octubre del 2000, hace 16 años, a la edad de 53 años. Pero siempre es bueno recordarlo con esta muy bella balada. Disfrútala.

HACE 30 AÑOS (1986-XV)

Continuamos con el segmento musical de 1986 de este mes de Setiembre, hace 30 años, y para el día de hoy, he querido elegir para ti un par de buenos temas interpretados por cantantes británicos.

1.-  NO ONE IS TO BLAME (Howard Jones).- Recuerdo mucho que en el año 85, se escucharon de manera regular en las radios locales los temas “Things Can Only Get Better” y “Like To Get To Know You Well” del británico Howard Jones. En ese álbum titulado “DREAM INTO ACTION”, se encontraba una canción titulada “No One Is To Blame”, en su versión original. Un año después, en 1986, este tema fue regrabado para darle un sonido más accesible para la radio y definitivamente, le agregó mucho más feeling teniendo como resultado una muy hermosa melodía. El tema fue escrito por Howard Jones y producido por Phil Collins y Hugh Padgham, contando además con la participación de Collins en los coros y batería. Esta nueva versión fue incluida en el EP “ACTION REPLAY”, así como en la versión CD del álbum “ONE TO ONE”. Fue lanzada como single el 15 de Marzo de 1986 en UK y el 24 de Marzo en USA, llegando al N° 4 en USA, según Billboard. Además, fue N° 1 en el USA Adult Contemporary, N° 9 en Australia, N° 16 en UK y N° 21 en Italia. Finalmente, en cuanto a la letra, habla acerca de las atracciones insatisfechas, utilizando metáforas para describir la frustración de experimentar una atracción pero siendo incapaz de tomar acción, sea cual fuere el motivo. 30 años después, vale la pena escuchar esta bella canción. 2.-  A DIFFERENT CORNER (George Michael).- Entre 1984 y 1986, el dúo Wham! tuvo un éxito descomunal tanto en USA como en Europa, y en ese año 86, George Michael lanzó su segundo single como solista –el anterior fue “Careless Whisper”-, que fue “A Different Corner”, una muy bella balada que tenía una hermosa melodía. El tema fue escrito y producido por George Michael e incluido en el álbum de Wham!, “MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF HEAVEN”, siendo lanzado como single el 2 de Abril de 1986, y llegando al N° 1 en UK por 3 semanas, el 19 de Abril de 1986. Además, fue N° 1 en Canadá, Holanda y Noruega, N° 2 en Irlanda, N° 3 e Italia, Suiza y Nueva Zelanda, N° 6 en Austria y en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 7 en USA y Alemania, N° 16 en Francia y N° 18 en Suecia. Han transcurrido 30 años y siempre es grato recordar este buen tema. Disfrútalo.
