MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 25 AÑOS (1988-XI)

Llegamos al penúltimo segmento musical dedicado a 1988 en este mes de Noviembre, hace ya 25 años, y en esta oportunidad, tenemos dos muy buenos temas. En Diciembre del año pasado, en el último post de 1987, incluimos la canción “Need You Tonight” de INXS, proveniente del álbum “KICK”, que fue lanzado a fines de 1987, pero cuyos singles alcanzaron gran éxito al año siguiente, en 1988. En ese post, señalé que en el 2013, de todas maneras iría un post dedicado a dos canciones de ese exitoso álbum. Y como dentro de dos días, el viernes 22 de Noviembre, se cumplirán 16 años de la partida de Michael Hutchence, la ocasión era más que oportuna para dedicar este segmento de 1988 a dos muy buenos temas del álbum “KICK”.

1.-  DEVIL INSIDE (INXS).- Tras el éxito mundial alcanzado por el single “Need You Tonight”, INXS vio su popularidad dispararse por todo lo alto con el álbum “KICK”, con el cual mantenía su estilo en donde destacaba esa impecable base rítmica. Y el siguiente paso fue el single “Devil Inside”, y aquí en nuestro medio tuvo harta difusión radial en casi todas las emisoras locales y su video también fue visto en los programas musicales de ese entonces. Incluso me atrevo a decir que aquí fue el tema más exitoso y difundido del “KICK”. Desde que la escuché, me encantó por ese ritmo tan contagiante y uno de sus elementos más distintivos fue ese riff de guitarra ya la forma susurrante de Michael Hutchence de interpretar el tema, en un estilo que combinaba adrenalina y bastante sensualidad. Y claro que el video ayudaba mucho en ello, por el atractivo elemento femenino que desfilaba en el clip.

“Devil Inside” fue escrita por Andrew Farris y Michael Hutchence, y fue producida por Chris Thomas. Fue lanzado como segundo single del álbum “KICK” en Febrero de 1988, llegando al N° 2 en USA, según Billboard, permaneciendo 2 semanas en dicha posición. Además fue N| 2 en el USA Album Rock Tracks, N° 6 en Australia, N° 20 en Francia, N° 25 en Irlanda, N° 33 en Alemania y N° 47 en UK. En cuanto al video clip del tema, fue filmado en Balboa, California y fue dirigido por Joel Schumacher. Aunque en una entrevista, el guitarrista y saxofonista, Kirk Pengilly señaló que no le había gustado el video, porque pensaba que era “demasiado norteamericano”. Finalmente, no puedo dejar de señalar que tuve la dicha de ver a INXS en mayo del 2002, cuando se presentaron en Lima, y con Jon Stevens en la voz principal reemplazando a Michael Hutchence. Fue un gran show en donde estuvieron cinco de los seis miembros originales, y en lo personal, esperaba que tocaran esta canción y cuando comenzaron a tocar el riff inicial, fue un momento emocionante. Han pasado más de 25 años de esta canción y es momento para recordarla una vez más.

2.- NEW SENSATION (INXS).-  Casi a la par con el tema anterior, INXS colocó otro gran éxito mundial con la canción “New Sensation”. E igualmente, aquí en nuestro medio, fue todo un hit tanto en las diversas emisoras de radio locales como en los programas musicales de TV, donde su video fue regularmente visto. El tema tenía un intro bastante ceremonioso para luego dar lugar al muy buen ritmo del tema, en donde destacaba un soberbio solo de saxo de Kirk Pengilly. 

“New Sensation” fue escrita por Andrew Farriss y Michael Hutchence, quien esciribió la letra, y fue producida por Chris Thomas. Fue lanzado como tercer single del álbum “KICK”, llegando al N° 3 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 1 en Canadá, N° 8 en el US Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, N° 9 en Australia y España, N° 15 en Irlanda y Sudáfrica, N° 16 en Nueva Zelanda, N° 18 en Holanda, N° 19 en Bélgica, N° 25 en UK y N° 35 en Alemania. E i gualmente en mayo del 2002, tuve la dicha de vivir este tema en concierto en un momento que fue super especial. 25 años después, evocamos nuevamente este muy buen tema.

Este ha sido la penúltima entrega musical dedicada a 1988. Espero que estos temas hayan sido de su completo agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. Y como un plus de este buen álbum “KICK”, tenemos el muy bello tema “Never Tear Us Apart”, y que en el concierto al cual fui en el 2002, tuvo la particularidad de que mientras los cinco miembros de INXs tocaban el tema, en pantalla gigante apareció la imagen de Michael Hutchence y su voz interpretando el tema en uno de los momentos más emotivos de esa noche.
