MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 20 AÑOS (1991-III)

Seguimos con este segmento musical dedicado al año 1991, hace ya 20 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 28 años de edad. Y siguiendo con el mes de la mujer, una vez más, con dos damas cuyas voces adornaron dos canciones en el año 91.

1.- BABY BABY (Amy Grant).- La primera vez que escuché algo de la norteamericana Amy Grant fue en 1986, en la balada que cantó a dúo con Peter Cetera, “The Next Time I Fall”. Y me gusto la suave voz de esta cantante. Pasarían algunos años para volver a escuchar de ella y fue con la canción “Baby Baby”, con la que triunfó notablemente en 1991. Cuando la escuché por primera vez, me gustó mucho su ritmo contagiante y al ver el video, me gustó el encanto y naturalidad de Amy Grant. Aquí “Baby Baby” fue bien difundida tanto en las radios locales como en algunos programas musicales de TV.

Escrita por Amy Grant y Keith Thomas, fue incluida en el album “HEART IN MOTION” y se lanzó como single el 18 de enero de 1991. Y el 27 de abril llegó al Nº 1 en USA, según Billboard, permaneciendo 2 semanas en esa posición. Además fue Nº 2 en UK y Canadá, Nº 5 en Australia y Suecia, Nº 6 en Noruega, Nº 7 en Austria e Irlanda y Nº 11 en Suiza. Sin duda, fue uno de los singles más exitosos de 1991. Posteriormente, se escucharía de ella otra bellísima canción, “I Will Remember You” en 1992.

Hoy, 20 años después, volvemos a evocar “Baby Baby” y el encanto de Amy Grant en el presente post.

2.- I TOUCH MYSELF (Divinyls).- Recuerdo bastante que esta canción, “I Touch Myself” del grupo australiano The Divinyls, sonó bastante en las radios locales y fue ampliamente difundida en la TV en los programas musicales de ese entonces. Y algo que quedó en la retina del público fue la imagen bastante sensual y provocativaa de la vocalista del grupo, Christina Amphlett, quien por momentos, hacía honor al título de la canción.

El tema fue escrito por Christina Amphlett y Mark McEntee –miembros de Divinyls- y los compositores profesionales Tom Kelly y Billy Steinberg –quienes han escrito canciones como "I'll Stand by You", "Like a Virgin", "Eternal Flame" y "True Colors", entre otras. Steinberg tenía "I Touch Myself" en su notebook y había escrito la primera estrofa y el coro. A Christina le gusto inmediatamente y al día siguiente, McEntee, Steinberg, Kelly, and Amphlett se juntaton y escribieron el resto, algo inusual, porque raramente Steinberg y Kelly eran de colaborar con otros artistas. Pero unir la canción fue todo un problema, porque por error, fue grabado en una cinta de dos pulgadas, haciendo difícil editarlo. Luego de bastante experimentación, ellos vinieron con una estructura inusual con el puente musical luego del primer coro. El single llegó al Nº 4 en USA, según Billboard, Nº 10 en UK y Nº 17 en Nueva Zelanda. Y hoy la recordamos en este post, 20 años después.
