MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 25 AÑOS (1987-VIII)

Y llegamos al segmento musical dedicado al año 1987, hace 25 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 24 años de edad. Y en esta ocasión, tendremos dos muy buenos temas de un recordado dúo británico que destacó nítidamente en ese año 87.

1.-  IT'S A SIN (Pet Shop Boys).- En 1986, el dúo británico Pet Shop Boys, conformado por Neil Tennant y Chris Lowe tuvieron un gran hit con "West End Girls". Pero en 1987, consolidaron su éxito con el album "ACTUALLY" y dentro de dicho album, había una canción que desde que la escuché por primera vez, me flechó de inmediato y hasta la fecha, es mi canción favorita de Pet Shop Boys: "It's A Sin". Su estructura musical me parecía brillante y maravillosamente producida y la interpretación de Neil Tennant era impecable e iba a la misma altura del fondo instrumental de la canción. Y definitivamente se convirtió en una de mis favoritas de ese año 87 y tuvo bastante difusión, principalmente en Radio Doble Nueve y en menor grado, en otras emisoras locales.

"It's A Sin" fue escrita por Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant y producido por Julian Mendelsohn y Stephen Hage. Fue el single principal del album "ACTUALLY" y fue lanzada el 15 de Junio de 1987, llegando al N° 1 en UK el 4 de Julio de 1987 por 3 semanas. También fue N° 1 en Austria, Alemania, Irlanda, Noruega, Suecia y Suiza, N° 3 en Italia, N° 9 en USA, según Billboard, N° 10 en Australia y N° 12 en Francia. El tema es una descripción de de la crianza y educación católica de Tennant en el St Cuthbert's High School, en Newcastle, en Tyne. El tema utiliza sampleo de misas en latín -específicamente Tennat recitando una parte del Confiteor y otros sonidos grabados en locaciones como la Catedral de Westminster-, e imágenes religiosas para reforzar el sentimiento de la canción. Tennant ha señalado que escribió las letras en 15 minutos, purgando sus emociones en un momento de frustración y amargura. El pasaje en latín cerca del final, traducido dice: "I confess to almighty God, and to you my brothers, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, act, and omission, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault". Y en cuanto al video de la canción, fue dirigida por Derek Jarman y marcó primero de varias colaboraciones entre la banda y Jarman. Han transcurrido 25 años de esta gran canción y sigue siendo uno de los temas más recordados de este gran dúo británico y una de las espinas que me quedaron dentro fue no haber podido ir al concierto que dieron en Lima en octubre del 2009 y haber vivido este maravilloso tema en concierto. Y hoy volvemos a recordar esta gran creación musical en el blog.

2.- WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS (Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield).- Sin duda alguna, otro tema que la rompió en 1987 fue "What Have I Done To Deserve This". Y me llamó la atención que los Pet Shop Boys eran acompañados por una cantante británica llamada Dusty Springfield. Recuerdo que me gustó mucho su voz y me parecía una muy buena cantante y nada más. Realmente desconocía en forma absoluta su glorioso pasado en los 60’s y años más tarde, descubriría sus grandes canciones. Y me gustó bastante el ritmo contagiante y armónico de la canción, que era bailable y elegante a la vez.  Cuando ví el video de la canción me gustó mucho la perfecta complementación entre Dusty y el dúo. Y realmente fue el afianzamiento de la gran popularidad de los Pet Shop Boys en el panorama musical mundial y paralelamente, ayudó mucho al reusrgimiento de la carrera musical de Dusty Springfield y generó un interés de las nuevas generaciones en su música.

"What Have I Done To Deserve This" fue escrita por Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe y Allee Willis, y producida por Stephen Hague- Y fue lanzada como single el 10 de Agosto de 1987, llegando al N° 2 en UK y en USA, según Billboard. También fue N° 1 en Irlanda por 6 semanas, N° 2 en Holanda y Suecia, N° 3 en Canadá, N° 4 en Bélgica y Alemania, N° 5 en Suiza, N° 6 Nueva Zelanda y Polonia, N° 8 en Francia y N° 8 en Noruega, N° 11 en Austria e Italia, N° 14 en el U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts, N° 16 en Sudáfrica y N° 22 en Australia. Luego de este gran hit, los Pet SHop Boys escribieron y produjeron los singles Nothing Has Been Proved" y "In Private" para Dusty, ambos incluidos en su album "REPUTATION" de 1990. 25 años después, volvemos a evocar este gran tema en el presente post.
