Llegamos
al segundo miércoles de este mes de Setiembre, y como es habitual, corresponde
presentar el segmento musical dedicado al año 1984, hace 30 años, cuando el que
escribe contaba con 21 años de edad. Para este mes, tendremos esta sección
musical por partida doble, tanto hoy como mañana. Para el día de hoy, tenemos
tres buenos temas de la norteamericana Cyndi Lauper, que alcanzaron un enorme
éxito hace 30 años.
1.- TIME
AFTER TIME (Cyndi Lauper).- A fines de 1983, Cyndi Lauper se hizo conocida en el mundo de la
música con el hit “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”, el cual alcanzó un gran éxito
en todo el mundo. Luego de ello, para el siguiente single, se apostó por una
balada y dio en el clavo, porque “Time
After Time” se convirtió en un gran hit alrededor del mundo. Era una muy
hermosa canción con una muy bella melodía e interpretada con harto feeling por
Cyndi Lauper. Aquí en nuestro medio, sonó bastante en las diversas radios
locales y su video fue bastante difundido en los programas musicales de ese
entonces, como “La Máquina del Rock”.
Con este tema, Cyndi alcanzaba su consagración definitiva.
“Time After Time” fue escrita por Cyndi Lauper y Rob Hyman, casi
al final de las sesiones de grabación de su álbum debut, y a insistencia de su
productor, Rick Chertoff. La inspiración para la canción vino luego de que
tanto Cyndi como Rob, pasaban por situaciones similares en sus relaciones: él
salía de una larga y dura relación, y ella tenía altibajos con su pareja David
Wolff –el mismo que salía en el video.
El título del tema se inspiró cuando la Lauper estaba leyendo “TV Guide” y vio
muchos títulos de películas y eligieron el título de un film de ciencia ficción
de 1979 llamado “Time After Time”. Fue producida por Rick Chertoff y lanzada
como segundo single de su álbum “SHE’S SO UNUSUAL” el 27 de Enero de 1984,
llegando al N° 1 en USA el 9 de Junio de 1984, según Billboard, por 2 semanas,
Además fue N° 1 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts, Canadá e Irlanda, N° 3 en
UK, Bélgica y Nueva Zelanda, N° 5 en Austria, Holanda e Italia, N° 6 en Australia
y Alemania, N° 7 en Suiza, N° 9 en Francia y N° 56 en Japón. En cuanto a la
letra de la canción, es una canción de amor y devoción y el video clip del tema
fue dirigido por Edd Griles. En dicho clip aparecieron la madre de Cyndi, su
hermano y su novio de ese entonces, David Wolff. 30 años después, evocamos ésta
muy hermosa canción.

2.- SHE BOP (Cyndi Lauper).- Tras el
éxito de “Time After Time”, Cyndi Lauper continuó con la misma senda exitosa
con su siguiente single, “She Bop”.
Aquí en nuestro medio, tuvo buena difusión radial pero en menor grado que sus
antecesoras y recuerdo haber visto por primera vez su video en “La Máquina del
Rock”. El tema tenía un ritmo bastante pegajoso y con un estilo bien ochentero.
Fue escrita por Cyndi Lauper, Stephen Broughton Lunt, Gary Corbett y Rick
Chertoff y producida por Rick Chertoff. Fue lanzada como single el 2 de Julio
de 1984, llegando al N° 3 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 3 en Japón, N°
5 en Austria y Canadá, N° 6 en Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Sudáfrica, N° 9 en
Suecia, N° 10 en Suiza, N° 19 en Alemania, N° 34 en Francia y N° 46 en UK. En cuanto a la letra del tema, fue considerada
controversial, porque hacía referencia a la masturbación y su contenido sexual,
aunque nunca se dijo de manera directa lo que era. En una entrevista, Lauper
dijo que quería que los niños pensaran que la canción era acerca de bailar y
entender el real significado cuando estuvieran mayores. Tres décadas después, vale la pena recordar
este gran hit.

3.- ALL THROUGH
THE NIGHT (CyndI Lauper).- Definitivamente,
1984 fue el año del despegue de Cyndi Lauper, quien logró consolidarse como una
exitosa artista nueva con los hits de su álbum debut. De todos los temas que
popularizó en todo el mundo, debo admitir que la canción que más me gustó fue
la bellísima balada “All Through The
Night”. La instrumentación era soberbia y la interpretación de Cyndi era
fabulosa, poniéndole el mayor sentimiento posible, y en lo personal, el solo de
guitarra en la última parte del tema era para poner la piel de gallina a
cualquiera. El tema fue escrito originalmente por Jules Shear para su álbum “WATCH
DOG”, como una canción de folk-rock. Después, el grupo The Cars grabaron su
propia versión, pero nunca la usaron en ninguno de sus álbumes, y fue allí
cuando Cyndi decidió grabar su propia versión. Aunque originalmente, ella
intentó hacer un cover similar a la versión original de Shear, pero al final la
convirtió en una balada pop, que fue producida por Rick Chertoff. Curiosamente,
sería el único single de Cyndi que no tuvo un video clip. De esta forma, fue
lanzada como single en Setiembre de 1984, llegando al N° 5 en USA, según Billboard,
y se convirtió en la primera artista femenina en tener cuatro singles del mismo
álbum en el Top-5 de la Billboard. Además fue N° 4 en el USA Adult Contemporary
Charts, N° 5 en Austria, N° 7 en Canadá, N° 16 en Suiza, N° 17 en Australia, N°
19 en Nueva Zelanda, N° 35 en Alemania y N° 64 en UK. Luego de 30 años, es
momento de volver a escuchar esta maravillosa canción.
