MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 20 AÑOS (1993-X)

Llegamos al décimo segmento musical de 19938, hace 20 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con 30 años de edad. En esta oportunidad, tenemos dos muy buenas canciones de un gran grupo norteamericano, que se presentó en Lima en noviembre del 2008. Me refiero la banda liderada por Michael Stipe: R.E.M.

1.-  EVERYBODY HURTS (R.E.M.).-  Tras el enorme éxito que tuvo R.E.M. en 1991 con el album “OUT OF TIME” y los singles “Losing My Religion” y “Shinny Happy People” , la expectativa por su próximo trabajo musical creció bastante. Y en octubre de 1992, lanzaron el álbum “AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE”, el cual representó una variante con respecto a su antecesor, predominando un sonido más melódico. Y uno de los temas que más refleja ese estilo fue “Everybody Hurts”, el cual fue un gran éxito al año siguiente, en 1993. Recuerdo mucho que se escuchó bastante en la programación diaria de Radio Doble Nueve y en menor grado, en Radio Miraflores. Poseía un estilo bien melancólico y que reflejaba fielmente el título de la canción, con una melodía que te llegaba a la fibra.

“Everybody Hurts” fue escrita por Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck y Bill Berry, y producida por Scott Litt y R.E.M. Fue el tercer single del álbum “AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE” y fue lanzado como single el 15 de Abril de 1993, llegando al N° 29 en USA, según Billboard. Además fue N° 3 en Francia, N° 6 en Irlanda y Australia, N° 7 en UK, N° 8 en Canadá y N° 21 en el U.S. Modern Rock Tracks. En cuanto a la canción, la mayor parte fue compuesta por el baterista Bill Berry y arreglo de cuerdas fue escrito por John Paul Jones, bajista de led Zeppelin. El guitarrista Peter Buck señaló: “’'Everybody Hurts’ es similar a ‘Man on the Moon’. Bill la trajo y era una canción country de un minute. No tenía coros ni puente alguno. Tenía la estrofa … Tuvimos como cuatro diferentes ideas y cómo acercarnos a ello. (…) Nos tomó una eternidad descubrir el arreglo y quién iba a tocar cada parte, y entonces Bill decidió no tocar en el track original. Era yo y Mike y una batería programada. Y luego todos lo sobregrabamos”.  En cuanto al video clip, fue dirigido por Jake Scott y filmado en el puente Fredericksburg Road, en San Antonio,  Texas, y fue inspirado por el tráfico de la secuencia inicial del film de Fellini, “8½”. Y algo que guardo presente siempre fue haber podido escuchar en vivo este tema en noviembre del 2008 cuando R.E.M. se presentó en Lima. No pude ir al concierto, pero gracias a mi gran amiga Clarita Romero, pude escuchar ese y otros temas más a través del celular. 20 años después, es momento de evocar ésta muy buena canción.

2.- MAN ON THE MOON (R.E.M.).-  Definitivamente, en mi opinion muy personal, uno de los mejores temas del album “AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE” -y me atrevo a decir, también de toda la discografía de R.E.M.- es el clásico “Man On The Moon”. Desde que la escuché por primera vez en Radio Doble Nueve, me pareció un tema genial por su muy buen ritmo y la impecable interpretación por parte de Michael Stipe, quien le pone todo el feeling posible. Y desde entonces, la considero una de mis favoritas de R.E.M. y nunca me canso de escucharla.

“Man on the Moon” fue escrita por Michael Stipe y producida por Scott Litt y R.E.M. Fue lanzada como segundo single del “AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE” el 21 de Noviembre de 1992, y fue en el verano del 93 cuando se escuchó en nuestro medio. Fue N° 2 en el U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks, N° 4 en Canadá, N° 17 en Irlanda, N° 18 en UK, N° 30 en USA, según Billboard, y N° 39 en Australia. En cuanto a la letra del tema, fue un homenaje al actor Andy Kaufman, en donde se mencionaba sus imitaciones de Elvis y habla sobre ciertas teorías de conspiración acerca de la llegada del hombre a la luna y de Elvis Presley. El tema le dio su nombre a un film de 1999, basado en la vida de Andy Kaufman, llamado también “Man On The Moon” y fue utilizado en el soundtrack del film. En cuanto al video clip, fue dirigido por Peter Care y fue filmado en tres días en el desierto, en Lancaster, en el área de Antelope Valley, en California, en Octubre de 1992. Han transcurrido 20 años de esta canción y la recordamos aquí en el blog.

Este ha sido el décimo segmento musical dedicado a 1993. Espero que estos dos muy buenos temas hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios. Y como un plus de este gran álbum de R.E.M, los dejo con el video del tema “Drive”.
