MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 40 AÑOS (1974-I)

Siendo el primer martes de febrero, hoy toca dar inicio al segmento musical dedicado al año 1974. O mejor dicho, reiniciar este segmento, ya que hace cinco años, en el 2009, en la sección de “Hace 35 Años”, desfilaron cuatro segmentos musicales. Y ahora que hemos llegado al 2014, regresa este año musical de 1974 en la sección de “Hace 40 Años”, la cual, como sucedió el año pasado con 1973, irá en el blog cada dos meses y el primer sábado de cada mes. Para este primer segmento, he elegido dos canciones que formaron parte de mi niñez y que alcanzaron un enorme éxito en todo el mundo.

1.-  ROCK THE BOAT (The Hues Corporation).-  Hace cinco años, tuvimos en uno de los segmentos musicales de 1974, el buen tema “Rockin’ Soul” de The Hues Corporation, pero quedó pendiente otra canción que fue todo un hit en todo el mundo y también en nuestro medio: “Rock The Boat”. Recuerdo mucho que allá por 1974, cuando este servidor tenía apenas 11 años de edad, ésta muy buena canción sonó bastante en las radios locales, sobre todo, en Radio Miraflores, Atalaya y Panamericana. Su ritmo era bastante pegajoso y yo me imagino que debe haber sido infaltable en todas las discotecas en ese entonces. Incluso me atrevo a decir que fue uno de los primeros hits de la época disco, que se desarrollaría en los años siguientes y explotaría con todo en 1978 y 1979.

“Rock the Boat” fue escrita por Waldo Holmes y producida por John Florez. Primero fue incluida en el álbum “FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION” y fue lanzada como segundo single de dicho álbum, llegando inicialmente al N° 63 en USA, según Billboard, y sin ninguna difusión radial y con nulas ventas. Sin embargo, cuando el tema se convirtió en favorito en New York, ello condujo a que el disco entrara al Hot 100 y en Julio de 1974 llegó al N° 1 en USA. Además fue N° 6 en UK. Al respecto, St. Clair Lee, miembro del grupo, señaló: “Era una canción que tu podías cualquier cosa. Podías abrazar o podías volverte loco si querías. Era una canción de amor, sin ser una canción de amor. Pero fue un hit Disco y sucedió debido a klos discos”. 40 años después, es bueno recordar ésta muy buena canción.

2.-  KUNG FU FIGHTING (Carl Douglas).- Otro tema que la rompió hace cuatro décadas fue “Kung Fu Fighting” de Carl Douglas. Aunque realmente recuerdo que escuché primero este tema en su versión en español, que no recuerdo quien la cantaba, hasta que poco después, escuché la versión original de Carl Douglas, y era abismal la diferencia y me gustó muchísimo por su muy buen ritmo bailable. Aquí en nuestro medio, tuvo una enorme difusión en casi todas las radios locales y recuerdo que la escuché primero en Radio Miraflores, en el recordado programa “Tú, Yo y Mis Discos” de mi entrañable amiga Dianita García.

“Kung Fu Fighting” fue escrita por Carl Douglas en la letra y por Biddu Appaiah, o Biddu, en la música, y producida por Biddu. Lo curioso es que iba a ser editada como lado B del single “I Want To Give You My Everything”. El producto Biddu contrató a Douglas para cantar ese tema, pero necesitaba algo para grabar como lado B, y le preguntó a Douglas si tenía algunas letras para ser usadas. Douglas le mostró varias y Biddu eligió una que después sería titulada “Kung Fu Fighting”, y trabajó en la melodía del tema, pero sin tomarla en serio. El tema fue grabado rápidamente en los últimos diez minutos de las sesiones en el estudio, en dos tomas, Biddu la consideraba bien sólo como lado B, y  luego que Robin Blanchflower de Pye Records escuchara ambas canciones. Insistió que “Kug Fu Fighting” debía ser el lado A. Fue lanzada como single en la segunda mitad de 1974, y al inicio el tema tuvo una pobre difusión radial y vendió muy poco, pero la canción comenzó a ganar popularidad en los dance clubs y de esta forma, el 21 de Setiembre de 1974, llegó al N° 1 en USA, según Billboard, por 3 semanas.  Además fue N° 1 en UK por 2 semanas, en Australia, Austria, Bélgica, Canadá, Francia, Alemania, Irlanda, Holanda y Sudáfrica, N° 2 en Suiza y N° 3 en Italia y Noruega. También ganó un Grammy como Mejor Single de 1974. Cuatro décadas después, evocamos una vez más este gran hit.

Este ha sido el primer segmento musical de 1974. Espero que estas dos muy buenas canciones hayan sido de su agrado y como siempre, los espero con sus visitas y comentarios.
