MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 35 AÑOS (1977-VI)

Llegamos al primer miércoles de junio y hoy toca el segmento musical dedicado al año 1977, hace 35 años, cuando el que escribe contaba con apenas 14 años de edad. Y en esta ocasión, toca el turno de dos muy buenas canciones de una de las bandas más destacadas en USA, que en ese año 77 la rompió en todo el mundo y también en nuestro medio. Me estoy refiriendo al grupo liderado por Glenn Frey y Don Henley, The Eagles.

1.-  HOTEL CALIFORNIA (The Eagles).-  ¿Qué no se ha dicho y escrito sobre esta canción? Sin duda alguna, “Hotel California” es uno de los temas que ha trascendido la barrera del tiempo. Y recuerdo mucho que en ese año 77, este tema sonó un montón en la radio, en todas las emisoras locales. No había programa musical en el que no se difundiera a cada rato esta canción. Y por supuesto, siendo un tema lento que además era de larga duración, era infaltable en cualquier fiesta y daba el motivo perfecto para apachurrarse a la chica que te gustaba a través de los largos minutos que duraba este tema.  Incluso a fin de año, en los rankings anuales en las diferentes radios locales, si bien es cierto, no llegó a ser elegida Disco de Año, pero estuvo entre las 10 primeras –o incluso entre las 5- en todas las emisoras de nuestro medio.

"Hotel California" fue escrita por Don Felder, Don Henley y Glenn Frey, producida por  Bill Szymczyk e incluida en el album “HOTEL CALIFORNIA”. Fue lanzada como single en febrero de 1977 y el 7 de Mayo llegó al Nº 1 en USA, según Billboard, por 1 semana. Pero, esta canción ha estado sujeta a diversas interpretaciones, alguna que son totalmente absurdas. Recuerdo que por la mención de la línea “ (…) But they just can't kill the beast”, ya ciertas sectores ultraconservadoras llegaban a la estupidez de considerar esta canción como satánica. De tantas idioteces que he escuchado, esta se lleva el premio. El hecho es que la misma banda -particularmente, Don Henley, quien canta el tema- describió este tema como su “interpretación de la ‘high life’ en Los Angeles”. Sobre los orígenes de la canción, Glenn Frey señaló: “La canción comenzó como una cinta de demo, un instrumental de Don Felder. El había estado presentándonos cintas y canciones desde que se había unido a la banda, siempre instrumentales, ya que el no cantaba. Pero este particular demo, a diferencia de los otros, tenía espacio para cantar e inmediatamente captó nuestra atención. El primer título, el nombre que le dimos, fue ‘Mexican Reggae’”. Don Henley, por su parte, indicó: “Es básicamente una canción acerca de los oscuros puntos débiles del sueño americano y acerca del esceso en Norteamérica, que era algo sobre el cual sabíamos bastante”.  Y en 1978, “Hotel California” ganó un premio Grammy a Disco del Año. Han pasado 35 años de esta canción y aún sigue gozando de las preferencias de nuevas generaciones. Y hoy, la volvemos a recordar en el blog.

2.-  NEW KID IN TOWN (The Eagles).-  Uno de los temas que más me gusta de The Eagles, es la hermosa balada “New Kid In Town”. En lo personal, esta canción me gusta muchísimo más que “Hotel California”, por su muy bella melodía, su ritmo bien cadencioso y sobre todo, por su impecable interpretación por parte de Glenn Frey. Aunque aquí en nuestro medio allá por 1977, el tema tuvo una mediana y breve difusión en las radios locales, en gran parte, eclipsada enormemente por el apabullante éxito de “Hotel California” en las programaciones locales.

"New Kid in Town" fue escrita por Don Henley, Glenn Frey y J.D. Souther, producida por Bill Szymczyk e incluida en el album “HOTEL CALIFORNIA”. Fue lanzada como primer single de dicho album el 7 de Diciembre de 1976, llegando al Nº 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 26 de Febrero de 1977 por una semana.  También fue Nº 1º en Canadá, Nº 2 en el U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks y Nº 20 en UK. Sobre el significado de la canción, en las notas del recopilatorio “THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES” del 2003, Don Henley señaló: “Es acerca de la naturaleza efímera e inconstante del amor y el romance. Es acerca de la efímera naturaleza de la fama, especialmente en el negocio de la música. Básicamente estuvimos diciendo: ‘Mira, sabemos que estamos al rojo vivo ahora, pero también sabemos que alguien está por venir y reemplazarnos, tanto en la música como en el amor”.  Y en 1977, The Eagles ganaron un Grammy como "Best Arrangement for Voices” con "New Kid in Town". 35 años después, volvemos a recordar a esta gran banda norteamericana con esta muy bella canción que caló hondo en los aficionados a la música.

Esta ha sido la sexta entrega musical del segmento dedicado a 1977.
