MIS CANCIONES FAVORITAS: HACE 25 AÑOS (1989-XIII)

Llegamos al tercer miércoles del mes de Octubre y toca presentar el segmento musical correspondiente al año 1989, hace 25 años, cuando quien escribe tenía 26 años de edad. Para el día de hoy, tenemos dos muy buenas canciones de dos destacados grupos británicos, que alcanzaron bastante éxito hace 25 años en el panorama musical.

1.- SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY (Fine Young Cannibals).-  Uno de los grupos británicos más destacados en 1989 fue sin duda, Fine Young Cannibals, conformado por Roland Gift, David Steele y Andy Cox, con su álbum “THE RAW AND THE COOKED”. Y precisamente, el tema más exitoso de aquel álbum fue “She Drives Me Crazy”, un tema con un ritmo bien agradable de escuchar y con un estilo acorde con los 80’s, además de una impecable interpretación por parte de Roland Gift. En lo personal, recuerdo que la escuché por primera vez en la BBC de Londres por Onda Corta y me pareció bastante interesante. Aquí se escuchó bastante en Radio Doble Nueve y en menor grado, en algunas otras radios locales. 

“She Drives Me Crazy” fue escrita por Roland Gift y David Steele y producida por David Z y Fine Young Cannibals. Fue lanzada como primer single del álbum "THE RAW AND THE COOKED" el 1° de Enero de 1989, llegando al N° 5 en UK y al N° 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 15 de Abril de 1989 por 1 semana. Además fue N° 1 en Canadá, Australia, España, Austria y Nueva Zelanda, N° 2 en Bélgica, Irlanda y Alemania, N° 3 en Suiza, N° 4 en Suecia, N° 6 en Noruega, N° 11 en Francia y N° 17 en Italia. Posteriormente, en ese mismo año 89, el grupo repetiría el plato con el single "Good Thing". Un cuarto de siglo después, recordamos una vez más esta gran canción.

2.- WHEN I SEE YOU SMILE (Bad English).- Los que idenficamos al cantante británico John Waite, recordamos que en 1979 tuvo un gran hit llamado “Everytime I Think Of You” con el grupo del cual formaba parte, The Babys. En los 80’s, para ser más exactos, en 1984, logró un gran éxito con el single “Missing You”. Y terminando la década del 80, en 1989, se juntó con Jonathan Cain y Ricky Phillips, del grupo The Babys para formar un nuevo grupo llamado Bad English, al cual se unieron Neal Schon –guitarrista de Journey- y Deen Castronovo. Y el primer tema que se escuchó de ellos fue “When I See You Smile”, una muy hermosa balada con mucha fuerza y un buen ritmo melódico. Aquí en nuestro medio, fue difundida en Radio Doble Nueve y Radio Miraflores. El tema fue escrito por Diane Warren y producido por Richie Zito. Fue incluido en el álbum “BAD ENGLISH” y lanzado como single el 16 de Setiembre de 1989, llegando al N° 1 en USA, según Billboard, el 11 de Noviembre de 1989 por 2 semanas. Además fue N° 1 en Canadá, N° 10 en el USA Album Rock Tracks, N° 11 en el USA Adult Contemporary Charts y N° 61 en UK.
